This morning, King Charles III attended a solemn church service to commemorate the second anniversary of the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
The service, held at Crathie Kirk near Balmoral Castle in Scotland, drew members of the royal family, close friends, and local dignitaries to honour the late Queen’s life and enduring legacy.
The small, intimate church—often frequented by the royal family during their stays at Balmoral—was filled with tributes to the Queen, whose record-breaking 70-year reign made her one of the most respected figures in modern history. The Queen passed away at Balmoral Castle on 8 September 2022, at the age of 96.
The service was led by Reverend Kenneth Mackenzie, minister of Crathie Kirk, who reflected on the Queen’s dedication to service, faith, and the nation. “Her Majesty’s legacy lives on, not just in the heart of the United Kingdom but across the Commonwealth,” Reverend Mackenzie said. “She exemplified grace, duty, and compassion.”

King Charles III was joined by Queen Camilla and several senior members of the royal family, including the Prince and Princess of Wales. After the service, the King spent time speaking with locals who had gathered outside the church to pay their respects. Many held flowers and messages of remembrance, while others recounted personal stories of encounters with the late Queen.
For King Charles, this is a deeply personal moment as he continues to navigate his reign while honoring the legacy of his mother. Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning monarch in British history, and her passing marked the end of an era. Her devotion to her role as sovereign, through times of great change, remains a cornerstone of British and Commonwealth identity.
In his public statement earlier this week, King Charles III expressed his deep affection for his late mother. “As we reflect on the second anniversary of my beloved mother’s passing, I am reminded of her unwavering commitment to duty and her deep love for her family and country,” the King said. “Her legacy continues to inspire and guide us all.”
Following the service, the royal family is expected to return to Balmoral Castle, a place long cherished by the Queen, for a private family gathering. Balmoral has been a retreat for the royal family for generations and was the setting of many fond memories for Queen Elizabeth throughout her life.
Across the UK and the Commonwealth, many communities are also marking the day with moments of reflection. In London, a special bell toll was held at Westminster Abbey, where the Queen’s coronation took place in 1953. Flags across government buildings are being flown at half-mast in her memory.
Queen Elizabeth II’s influence extended well beyond her record-breaking reign. Her impact on global diplomacy, charitable work, and her steadfast leadership through times of war, peace, and immense social change left a lasting imprint on generations.
Today’s service served as a poignant reminder of her remarkable life, her contributions to the nation, and the continuity of the monarchy under her son, King Charles III.
