In a major milestone for Scotland’s space sector, the Higgs Centre for Innovation has reopened its state-of-the-art Space Testing Facility after a nine-month, £400,000 overhaul funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).
Now equipped with new clean rooms and top-tier testing equipment, the facility aims to support the ever-growing number of small and medium space enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups that are powering the UK’s space ambitions.
With this upgrade, the Higgs Centre – nestled at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh alongside the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) and the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Astronomy – is now better equipped than ever to help early-stage technology companies test and refine their hardware for orbit. The Centre also serves as Scotland’s European Space Agency (ESA) Business Incubation Centre, a critical asset in the UK’s end-to-end space capability.
Expanded Testing for a Thriving Sector
The renovation has expanded access to advanced equipment for a wider range of technology SMEs and space start-ups across Scotland, now home to over 180 space companies. This facility offers an impressive suite of testing capabilities, from vibration and thermal testing to vacuum, optical, SpaceWire, electromagnetic compatibility, and radio frequency testing. These services allow companies to evaluate the durability and launch readiness of their equipment to NASA and ESA standards well before any satellite or spacecraft reaches the launchpad.
Top-Tier Support for Start-Ups
Beyond equipment, the Higgs Centre offers critical specialist advice on designing testing protocols and analysing results – an invaluable resource that would otherwise be out of reach for many small businesses. By making these facilities accessible, the Centre empowers companies to bring products to market faster while cutting costs and reducing risks.
STFC’s Dr Julian Dines, Head of Innovation at the Higgs Centre, said, “After nine months of hard work we are thrilled to throw open our doors once again and invite companies to access our bigger and better range of dedicated space testing facilities at the Higgs Centre. This upgrade means an even broader range of space testing can now take place on site here in Edinburgh, increasing the reliability of satellites in orbit.”
Powering Scotland’s Space Eco-System
Scottish start-ups, from artificial intelligence firms to satellite hardware providers, are already making full use of the upgraded facilities. Edinburgh-based Alpha Data, for example, recently conducted critical vibration testing at the Centre. Andrew McCormick, Technical Director and CTO of Alpha Data, said: “Once we made contact, we were easily able to communicate our needs and get support on the specific tests and specifications needed. This testing and support allowed Alpha Data to demonstrate the physical ruggedness and launch potential of our platform.”
With the relaunch of the Higgs Centre, Scotland is reinforcing its reputation as a global leader in space technology, ensuring that the nation remains at the forefront of space exploration and innovation.
