Pressure is mounting on Ed Miliband, after Shadow Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero, Joy Morrissey raised serious questions about a £4 million donation made to Labour by Quadrature Capital just prior to a key appointment in the Government’s climate policy team.
The controversy centres on whether Miliband, who is spearheading Labour’s ambitious climate agenda, fully declared the £4 million donation from Quadrature Capital before appointing a new climate envoy.
Joy Morrissey, the Conservative MP for Beaconsfield, speaking in Parliament, alleged that Miliband’s failure to declare the donation raises serious concerns over transparency and potential conflicts of interest.
Did Miliband Disclose the £4m Donation?
Ms Morrissey pressed the Energy Secretary to clarify whether the substantial donation was properly declared prior to the high-profile appointment. However, instead of a straightforward response, there was what the MP described as “more evasion” from Miliband’s team.
“I think we can all see that the answer is no,” the Conservative MP stated, expressing frustration at Labour’s lack of transparency on the issue. She also questioned whether Miliband or other senior Labour figures had held meetings with the Directors of Quadrature Capital and its philanthropic arm, Quadrature Climate Foundation, prior to the appointment.
“For clarity,” she pointed out, “the directors of both organisations are the same people.” Yet, she claims, Miliband and his team have continued to dodge direct questions about any such meetings, once again opting for evasive responses.
Ministerial Code in Question
At the heart of the matter is whether Ed Miliband adhered to the Ministerial Code, which requires ministers to declare any donations that may present a conflict of interest, especially when appointing individuals to influential government positions.
“The Ministerial Code is crystal clear,” a former Conservative Minister said. “So why won’t Miliband be clear about this potential conflict of interest? The British public deserves to know whether Labour’s climate policy is being influenced by big-money donors.”
Calls for Transparency
Critics argue that Quadrature Capital’s hefty donation raises questions about Labour’s climate policy priorities, given the direct link between the firm and the newly appointed climate envoy. Quadrature Capital, a hedge fund known for its investments in tech and sustainability, also operates the Quadrature Climate Foundation, which focuses on funding climate initiatives.
The Conservative MP’s questions have sparked calls for greater scrutiny over Labour’s relationship with its donors, particularly when there are potential overlaps between donations and policy appointments.
As pressure builds, Conservative MPs are demanding that Miliband come clean on any meetings held with Quadrature’s directors and explain why he has so far avoided directly addressing the issue.
Labour Under Fire for Transparency Issues
This latest controversy adds to the growing list of questions surrounding Labour’s transparency on donations and appointments. With Miliband’s climate agenda being a central plank of Labour’s policy platform, critics are urging the Government to come forward with a full account of how the Quadrature donation was handled.
