In a landmark move for the global aerospace and defence industry, BAE Systems (UK), Leonardo (Italy), and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co Ltd (JAIEC) have reached an agreement to form a new joint venture company for the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).
The programme, established in December 2022, aims to deliver a next-generation combat aircraft with operational capabilities extending beyond 2070. The joint venture is subject to regulatory approvals.
A Trilateral Partnership of Equals
Each company will hold a 33.3% share in the new organisation, pooling their combined expertise to spearhead the ambitious project. This agreement builds on the trilateral government, defence, and industrial collaboration between the UK, Japan, and Italy, which has been at the heart of the GCAP initiative.
The joint venture will oversee the design, development, and delivery of the combat air system, retaining design authority throughout the aircraft’s lifecycle. The new organisation will have operations and joint teams working across the three partner nations, with its headquarters in the UK to ensure close alignment with the GCAP International Government Organisation (GIGO), also based in the UK. The target date for the aircraft’s in-service debut is 2035.
Leaders Speak on the Milestone Agreement
Speaking on the announcement, Charles Woodburn, Chief Executive of BAE Systems, said:

However, I believe that through continuing the strong spirit of trilateral cooperation and collaboration that we have fostered up to this point, we will not only deliver the GCAP on time but also at a level that exceeds all of our expectations.”
