In a move that has sparked surprise and intrigue, President-elect Donald Trump has appointed British TV producer Mark Burnett as his special envoy to the United Kingdom.
Burnett, 64, is a household name in the television industry, famed for producing iconic reality shows such as Survivor, Dragons Den and The Voice.
However, it is his creation of The Apprentice that cemented his connection with Mr Trump, transforming the New York real estate mogul into a global television personality.
The hit reality series, which debuted in 2004, cast Mr Trump as the ultimate self-made billionaire, delivering his now-famous catchphrase “You’re fired!” to contestants in boardroom eliminations. The show is widely credited with rehabilitating Mr Trump’s public image after earlier financial troubles and played a pivotal role in shaping the persona that would propel him to political success.
In a statement, Mr Trump hailed Mr Burnett’s career achievements, saying: “It is my great honour to appoint Mark Burnett as the special envoy to the United Kingdom. With a distinguished career in television production and business, Mark brings a unique blend of diplomatic acumen and international recognition to this important role.”
The president-elect outlined Mr Burnett’s focus as strengthening diplomatic ties and fostering collaboration in areas of mutual interest, such as trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
The appointment of a special envoy to the UK is notable, as such roles are typically reserved for hotspots like the Middle East. However, the longstanding “special relationship” between the UK and the US appears to be taking on renewed importance under Mr Trump’s administration.
Burnett said in a statement: “I am truly honoured to serve The United States of America and President Trump as his Special Envoy to the United Kingdom.”
Mr Burnett was born and raised in Essex serving as a paratrooper in the British Army before emigrating to the US in 1982, when he was 22.
Mr Burnett is now poised to play a key role in fostering the transatlantic partnership, with a focus on trade and cultural ties as the US-UK relationship evolves in a new political era.
Mr Burnett’s appointment comes as Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently named Lord Peter Mandelson as the UK’s ambassador to Washington—a controversial pick given Mandelson’s past criticism of Mr Trump. The former Cabinet minister once described the president-elect as “little short of a white nationalist and racist,” remarks that could complicate efforts to maintain strong UK-US relations.
Chris LaCivita, a senior adviser to Mr Trump’s campaign, didn’t mince words, calling Mandelson an “absolute moron.”
