In a groundbreaking achievement that underscores British engineering prowess, Singapore-based shipbuilder Strategic Marine has commissioned a trio of offshore supply vessels that are officially the fastest of their kind in the world.
Each of these cutting-edge vessels boasts an impressive top speed of over 53 knots (more than 60 mph) and owes its record-breaking performance to the advanced power of Rolls-Royce’s mtu engines.
The vessels, powered by four Rolls-Royce 16-cylinder mtu Series 2000M72 engines, represent a shining example of British innovation on the global stage. With each propulsion package delivering a remarkable 5,760 kW of power, the vessels are setting new standards in the offshore oil and gas industry, where speed and efficiency are paramount. They will be deployed by a national oil company in Africa for passenger transfers to offshore platforms and Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels.
Rolls-Royce’s Role in Revolutionary Design
Built with state-of-the-art technology, the 35-metre-long vessels have been designed as “Surface Effect Ships” (SES), incorporating air-cushion technology within a catamaran hull form. This pioneering approach, used for the first time in the offshore oil and gas sector, minimises hull drag and resistance, enabling unparalleled speeds while conserving fuel.
The advanced mtu engines provide an optimal power-to-weight ratio, a crucial factor in ensuring the vessels achieve their extraordinary speeds without compromising efficiency. Powerful fans generate an air cushion between the hulls, significantly reducing drag and allowing the vessels to travel faster than conventional monohulls and catamarans. Despite their record-breaking top speed, fuel consumption remains consistent, reducing emissions and ensuring an environmentally friendly operation.

During sea trials, the vessels clocked an incredible 53 knots, demonstrating the success of Strategic Marine’s innovative approach. “Our goal in building these crew transport vessels was to minimise water resistance and maximise speed. The mtu engines have played a pivotal role, thanks to their unique power-to-weight ratio,” said Chan Eng Yew, CEO of Strategic Marine.
