Great Britain has another golden sporting achievement to celebrate after ice dancing sensations Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson stormed to victory at Skate Canada International, delivering a dazzling performance to secure their first title at the prestigious competition.

The British duo began their 2026/27 Grand Prix campaign in spectacular fashion, claiming gold in Kelowna, British Columbia, on Sunday, 1 November, with a superb combined score of 201.17 points.

Competing against some of the world’s finest ice dancers, Fear and Gibson led the competition from start to finish, winning both the rhythm dance and free dance to secure their fifth career Grand Prix title.

It was another magnificent achievement for the hugely talented partnership, who have established themselves among the world’s elite and continue to fly the Union Jack with pride on the international sporting stage.

The pair opened their campaign with an energetic flamenco-inspired rhythm dance, performed to music by the Gipsy Kings, scoring an impressive 81.37 points and establishing a lead of almost three and a half points over their nearest rivals.

They followed that with a glamorous, jazz-inspired free dance featuring Shirley Bassey’s Get The Party Started and music from Moulin Rouge! The Musical.

Their sparkling routine, which combined technical precision with theatrical flair, earned 119.80 points and brought their winning total to 201.17.

France’s Evgeniia Lopareva and Geoffrey Brissaud finished second with 192.95 points, while Americans Caroline Green and Michael Parsons claimed bronze with 186.02.

The victory was particularly special because Skate Canada has played an important role in the British pair’s remarkable journey.

It was at the same venue, Prospera Place in Kelowna, that Fear and Gibson won their first Grand Prix medal in 2019, taking bronze.

They subsequently collected silver medals at Skate Canada in both 2022 and 2023, but the top step of the podium had remained elusive until now.

Seven years after their first breakthrough, they returned to the Canadian arena and finally secured the gold they had been chasing.

Reflecting on the emotional significance of the victory, Fear said: “It’s always a joy to go to Skate Canada and especially with such fond memories from 2019.”

She added: “That was a core memory for us in our career. To win our first Skate Canada here is just another beautiful memory in the memory book.”

The triumph represents another chapter in an extraordinary period for British ice dancing.

Fear and Gibson made history at the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships when they captured bronze, becoming the first British ice dancers to win a World Championship medal since the legendary Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean in 1984.

They have also won eight British national titles, four consecutive European Championship medals and bronze at the Grand Prix Final in both 2024 and 2025.

Their success has helped restore Great Britain to prominence in a discipline forever associated with Torvill and Dean’s unforgettable Olympic gold medal-winning Boléro performance at Sarajevo in 1984.

Now another British partnership is inspiring a new generation of young skaters and proving that this country can still compete with the very best in the world.

Training in Montreal under renowned coaches Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon and Romain Haguenauer, Fear and Gibson have spent years developing their distinctive style, combining demanding technical elements with infectious energy and crowd-pleasing performances.

Their latest victory demonstrates that the hard work is continuing to pay dividends.

And there is little time for celebration, with the British stars heading straight to China for their next Grand Prix assignment.

They will compete at the Cup of China in Shenzhen from 6 to 8 November, hoping to build on their excellent start and strengthen their chances of qualifying for the Grand Prix Final in Chongqing in December.

Only the six highest-ranked ice dance teams across the Grand Prix series will qualify for that prestigious season-ending competition.

For Fear and Gibson, who have already collected two consecutive Grand Prix Final bronze medals, another podium finish will undoubtedly be among their ambitions.

Their Canadian success is also a wonderful reminder of the extraordinary sporting talent Britain continues to produce across disciplines that do not always command the headlines.

From the curling rink to the ice dancing arena, British athletes are competing, succeeding and bringing home medals against the world’s finest.

And with the Union Jack flying proudly above another international podium, Fear and Gibson have given the country yet another reason to celebrate.

A sensational start to the season, a thoroughly deserved gold medal and another magnificent achievement for British sport.

Congratulations, Lilah and Lewis. Great Britain is proud of you!
