Glory for Britain’s Baseball Young Guns: U23 National Team Storm to Historic European Championship Gold

It was a day that will go down in British sporting history. On Saturday, 9 August, the Great Britain U23 National Baseball Team defied the odds, roared back from a six-run deficit, and claimed their first-ever WBSC U23 European Baseball Championship with a thrilling 9-7 victory over host nation Czechia.

The triumph marks Great Britain Baseball’s first gold medal since the 1938 Amateur World Series, the inaugural edition of what would become the Baseball World Cup, when Britain stunned the United States four games to one to be crowned World Champions.

Early Setback – and a Mountain to Climb
Czechia came out swinging in front of a home crowd, piling on three runs in the first inning against GB starter Cam Moore, who was making his tournament debut. Walks to Simon Klacl and Michal Sindelka, a perfectly placed bunt from Jan Popisil, and a clutch RBI single from Michal Pokorny saw the hosts seize early control.

Eddie Taylor came out of the bullpen and ended the threat with a strikeout, but the Brits were already facing a 3-0 deficit. Matters worsened in the second and third innings, as Czechia added four more runs, leaving Great Britain staring down a daunting 7-1 scoreline in the European Championship Final.

The Turning Point – Smith and Wallis Lead the Charge
Enter Jay Smith. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, the fleet-footed outfielder lashed a double to left-centre, clearing the bases and sparking a British revival. Czech starter David Krecek was yanked, but his replacement, Matyas Trcka, was immediately punished by Jackson Wallis, who smashed a two-run home run to left field.

In one breathtaking inning, Great Britain had cut the gap to 7-5 – and the comeback was well and truly on.

Pitching Steel and Late-Inning Heroics
Ollie Duthie steadied the ship on the mound, retiring eight straight Czech batters before turning things over to Zac Colletti, who coolly induced a first-pitch pop-up to escape a threat in the sixth.

Then came the decisive blow. Wallis singled, Will Kraemer followed with another hit, and Captain Jake Lambdin ripped a double down the left-field line to score Wallis and move Kraemer to third. Tucker Stockman’s double to left – aided by a Czech error – brought both men home and gave Great Britain a 9-7 lead.

The seventh inning was nerve-shredding. Czechia put two men on and advanced them into scoring position with a smart bunt, but Colletti struck out Vlach and forced Klacl to fly out to centre. The final out sparked scenes of unrestrained joy as Britain’s U23s mobbed the field in celebration.

Heroes of the Final
Wallis, perfect at the plate with three hits in three at-bats, including his two-run homer, was named Championship MVP. Stockman finished the tournament second in runs scored (6) and tied for the lead in doubles (3). On the mound, Colletti emerged as the only pitcher to collect two wins, adding one of just four saves recorded across the competition.

What’s Next for GB Baseball
The victory adds a golden chapter to Britain’s growing baseball story, with the Senior National Team now eyeing success at the European Baseball Championships in Rotterdam from 20-27 September 2025.
