Let me get straight to the point: it’s absolutely baffling, utterly beyond belief, that Labour and the Lib Dems seem to have declared open war on Britain’s motorists.
If you’re one of the millions of hard-working Brits who rely on your car to get around, you’re probably wondering why on earth these parties seem determined to make your life as difficult as possible.
I mean, really, what have drivers ever done to deserve this constant onslaught of punitive policies? From soaring fuel duties to Sadiq Khan’s dreaded ULEZ expansion, it’s as if Labour and the Lib Dems wake up every morning and think, “How can we make things even worse for drivers today?”
Driving Britain Forward—Not Driving Us Into the Ground
Let’s be clear: cars are not a luxury for most people. They’re not some sort of indulgence for a select few. They are the essential workhorses of our daily lives. People use them to get to work, take the kids to school, do the shopping, visit relatives. In large parts of this country, particularly in rural areas, public transport is as rare as a functioning French train station during a strike. It simply doesn’t exist. So what are people supposed to do? Teleport?
And yet, the geniuses in Labour-run councils and Lib Dem strongholds seem to think you can just abandon your car and hop onto a bus that might never arrive, or fork out thousands of pounds for a shiny new electric vehicle that most families simply can’t afford. They don’t seem to grasp that for millions of Brits, cars are a lifeline.
ULEZ: A Tax on the Working Classes
Take the London Mayor, Sadiq Khan’s ULEZ expansion, for instance. It’s not just a mild inconvenience. It’s a tax on the very people Labour claims to represent. Yes, we all want cleaner air, of course we do. But why is it that the burden always falls on the working classes, the families who can least afford it? The cost of upgrading to a compliant vehicle is eye-watering, and many people are stuck driving older cars because, well, they don’t have a spare £25,000 lying around to switch to a new one.
What are they supposed to do? Pay daily fines for simply driving their kids to school? It’s madness! Khan and his Labour cronies will tell you it’s about saving the planet, but let’s be honest, it’s also about raking in the cash.
Plus, hasn’t the science already shown that the ULEZ expansion failed to reduce pollution levels? Bromley Council recently reported that there has been “no overall reduction in pollution” since the expansion was implemented.
Labour and Lib Dems: Cashing in on Motorists
So perhaps it’s as we all suspected in the first place, a dirty little secret: motorists are a cash cow for these parties. Year after year, billions are squeezed out of drivers through fuel duty, road taxes, parking fees, and now, emissions charges. But where does all that money go? Is it being invested back into our crumbling road network? Are we seeing improvements in public transport to offer people genuine alternatives? No, we’re not.
Labour and the Lib Dems have the gall to lecture the public about ‘doing their bit,’ all while turning the screws on the people who are keeping this country moving. They’re not funding better public transport or building new roads; they’re just punishing motorists and cashing in on the fines.
The Hypocrisy Is Stunning
And let’s not even get started on the sheer, breathtaking hypocrisy of it all. You’ve got these Labour and Lib Dem politicians swanning around, many in chauffeur-driven cars or jetting off in private planes all while telling the rest of us to cycle or take the bus. It’s the classic “do as I say, not as I do” mantra of the liberal elite.
It’s all very well if you live in a central London townhouse, with tube stations on every corner and a cab just a phone call away. But they’ve forgotten—or simply don’t care—that most of Britain doesn’t live like that. People in rural Yorkshire, the Midlands, the Scottish Highlands, or Wales need their cars. Without them, life grinds to a halt.
The Farce of Wales’ 20mph Speed Limits
And now, let’s talk about a complete absurdity from Labour run Wales—the rollout of their disastrous 20mph speed limits. When Mark Drakeford decided to impose this new restriction on roads across Wales, it was a slow-motion car crash of a policy. Of course at the time they said it was about road safety, but what it really did was create endless traffic jams, more pollution from cars idling, and absolute frustration for the people who rely on their cars to work, shop, and get their kids to school.
Imagine the daily grind of crawling along at 20mph when you’re already trying to make ends meet. It’s a farcical policy, cooked up by politicians with no understanding of the impact it has on real lives. It’s not just slowing down traffic—it’s slowing down the entire economy. Small businesses, delivery drivers, and tradespeople are all still suffering because of this ridiculous scheme, while ordinary Welsh drivers are left pulling their hair out.
It’s yet another anti-motorist policy that punishes the very people who keep our country moving.
The War on Small Business
But it’s not just families feeling the pinch. Let’s talk about the businesses. Delivery drivers, plumbers, electricians, and tradespeople who rely on their vans to keep their businesses afloat. Labour and the Lib Dems are crippling these people with endless charges and restrictions. Congestion charges, ULEZ fines—it all piles up, driving up costs for small businesses and, inevitably, consumers.
It’s astonishing that Labour, a party that once claimed to stand up for working people, has somehow found a way to penalise those very people while pretending it’s all for the greater good.
We Need a Pro-Motorist Revolution
So, here’s what we need: a pro-motorist revolution! We need policies that actually support the people who rely on their cars to live and work, not punish them. We need real investment in our roads, not just more charges, fines, and taxes. And we need to remember that Britain was built on the freedom of movement, the ability to get in your car and go wherever you need, whenever you need to.
Britain’s drivers deserve better. We should be supporting our motorists, not vilifying them. And if Labour and the Lib Dems can’t see that, well, perhaps it’s time for them to take a long drive themselves—into the political wilderness, where their anti-motorist policies belong. Roll on 2029.
So, next time you see one of these anti-car crusaders, tell them that cars aren’t the problem—they’re part of the solution to keeping this great country of ours on the move.
