Conservative Party leadership candidate Robert Jenrick has reignited calls for the UK to leave the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) following a controversial court ruling.
Taking to social media today, Jenrick criticised the ECHR for blocking the deportation of a foreign murderer on grounds that it would harm his mental health.
The foreign national who murdered a man in the back of a London ambulance will not be deported due to concerns for his mental health, the court ruled. The Ugandan citizen, sentenced to life in prison for the killing, successfully challenged the Home Office’s deportation efforts, citing his rights under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). His legal team argued that deportation would be “inhumane” as Uganda lacks adequate mental health facilities to care for him. The court upheld the appeal, granting the murderer anonymity in the process.
“The public will now pick up the bill accommodating him for the rest of his life. You can’t derogate from, or reform, this Article 3 loophole. Enough. We must leave,” Robert Jenrick stated on X.
Jenrick’s comments are backed up by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. Speaking on GB News recently, Mr Farage said: “We don’t need European style human rights, we’ve been since the Magna Carta the freest country in the world… and we should be rather proud of the fact that we as a country have always have always given the individual much greater protection against an overbearing state.”
A petition led by Dame Andrea Jenkyns and Claire Bullivant on the Conservative Post has gathered over 50,000 signatures, calling for the UK to exit the ECHR.
The growing support highlights widespread frustration across the country over perceived constraints on national sovereignty and public safety. The petition is expected to further fuel the debate on the UK’s continued membership in the ECHR, a contentious issue that is likely to shape the upcoming party leadership contest.
