This month marks the 75th Anniversary of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and, just as it was in 1950, the British Army has once again taken on the prestigious role of lead service, bringing them front and centre to a global audience.
The Tattoo’s origins stretch back more than seven decades, inspired by a modest performance titled Something About a Soldier, staged in 1949 at the Ross Bandstand in Princes Street Gardens.
The first official Military Tattoo followed in 1950, and it has since grown into a world-renowned celebration of music, pageantry, and military tradition.
This year, the Conservative Post were lucky enough to see the official ‘Dress Rehearsal’ which took place on the iconic Edinburgh Castle Esplanade.
More than 8,600 spectators filled the stands to witness a stirring preview of the month-long spectacle.
On parade were pipers, drummers, and musicians from The Scots Guards, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, The Royal Corps of Signals, British Army Bands Catterick, Tidworth, and Colchester, The Duchess of Edinburgh’s String Orchestra, and The Band of the Prince of Wales. Together, they form the world-famous Massed Pipes and Drums and Military Musicians, a centrepiece of the Tattoo’s performances.
International acts are also joining the British Army in delivering an unforgettable programme for 2025. The line-up includes the Band of the Polish Border Guard, Top Secret Drum Corps from Switzerland, the United States Honour Guard Drill Team, the Ukraine Naval Forces Orchestra, and the United States Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps.
The 1st Battalion, The Royal Yorkshire Regiment are providing the Guard of Honour for the VVIP guests and Salute Takers each evening, upholding the Tattoo’s long-standing ceremonial traditions.
Audiences are invited to gather on the Castle Esplanade from now until 23 August for this year’s show, The Heroes Who Made Us, honouring the men and women whose service and sacrifice have shaped history. The 75th Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is both a celebration of the past and a salute to the future, uniting performers and spectators from across the globe in a shared spirit of pride, pageantry, and respect.
