Britain is gearing up for its next great technological leap, with a bold new drive into quantum computing set to transform everything from healthcare and finance to defence and national security.

In a major show of ambition, researchers and businesses across the country will soon gain access to some of the most advanced quantum computers on Earth, as ministers commit to ushering in a new era of computing over the coming decade.

At the heart of the plan is UK Research and Innovation, which will support the development and roll-out of large scale quantum machines on British soil, ensuring the UK remains a global leader in this cutting edge field.

The move forms part of a wider £2 billion package unveiled by the Technology Secretary and the Chancellor, a clear signal that Britain intends to stay firmly at the forefront of quantum innovation.

Boosting confidence to innovate

Britain is taking a full stack approach, backing both the hardware and the software needed to power the quantum revolution.

Leading the charge are the National Quantum Computing Centre and the Quantum Software Lab at the University of Edinburgh, institutions tasked with pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

With £20 million in support, they will independently test and validate the latest quantum systems, giving British industry and researchers the confidence to innovate faster and compete globally.

Further early investments include £13.8 million for the National Quantum Technology Hubs and £12 million for a new commercialisation skills centre, designed to turn bright ideas into real world success.

Rolling out quantum at scale

In a world first, Britain has committed to rolling out quantum computing at this scale, a move that could add a staggering £200 billion to the economy by 2045.

A pioneering procurement programme will invite companies from around the globe to partner with the UK, spanning everything from processors and manufacturing to long term investment in British supply chains.

Prototype quantum computers, among the most advanced ever built, will be developed and rigorously assessed.

The best of these systems will then be made available to researchers, public sector bodies and businesses, marking a decisive step forward for British science.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall made clear the government’s determination to seize the opportunity.

Professor Charlotte Deane of UK Research and Innovation said the announcement marks a turning point.

Quantum technology, she noted, has the potential to transform sectors from healthcare and renewable energy to national security.

She said the new funding signals a shift towards real world deployment, building on years of sustained investment and the development of world class talent.

More funding for flagship research hubs

An additional £13.8 million will strengthen the national Quantum Technology Hubs, which have already bolstered Britain’s capabilities across communications, computing, imaging, sensing and timing.

Working with more than 120 industrial partners, these hubs have ensured that top tier academic research is translated into practical impact and commercial success.

Building skills for the future

A further £12 million will fund a dedicated skills centre, ensuring Britain has the expertise needed to turn research breakthroughs into real world applications.

The centre will support both current and future leaders in the field, helping to secure Britain’s position at the cutting edge of this critical technology.

Details of funding opportunities are expected to be released in April 2026, as the UK presses ahead with plans to lead the world into the quantum age.

Will Britain filter out all future Dr. Kahns, the foreign spy thanks to whom India and Pakistan got their nuclear bombs, now in the hands of Modi/BJP/Hindutva as far as India is concerned? It’ll be just a matter of time before their countries of origin become leader too in the field.
    A similar betrayal case is when Indian born British official Mr. Vijay Rangarajan betrayed the Chagossians when drafting the Chagos Treaty, preventing any self-determination referendum, effectively giving Chagos to India for MAHASAGAR via Mauritius, while in so doing hurt the UK’s national interest.
