The Union Flag was flying proudly in China as Great Britain’s women cyclists delivered a sensational performance to defeat reigning champions Italy and become world champions once again.

GREAT BRITAIN has another golden sporting triumph to celebrate after its women’s team pursuit squad produced a magnificent display of speed, teamwork and determination to win the 2026 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai.

Anna Morris, Josie Knight, Millie Couzens and Erin Boothman powered to victory over Italy in Thursday’s four-kilometre final, crossing the line in four minutes and 4.610 seconds.

The Italians, who arrived as defending world champions, finished in 4:09.967, leaving the British quartet victorious by 5.357 seconds.

It was a commanding performance on the world stage and another proud moment for British cycling.

The British squad had already demonstrated its formidable strength by qualifying fastest before overcoming the Netherlands in the first round to secure a place in the gold-medal contest.

But the final would provide the ultimate test against an experienced Italian team featuring Elisa Balsamo, Chiara Consonni, Martina Fidanza and Vittoria Guazzini.

Italy made the faster start, initially putting the British riders under pressure as the two teams raced around the Shanghai Velodrome.

However, Britain’s women refused to be unsettled.

Riding with remarkable precision and composure, they gradually overturned the deficit, building momentum as the race progressed.

By the halfway stage, the British team had established a narrow advantage. From there, the gap continued to grow.

With every lap, the British quartet extended its lead, leaving the Italians unable to match their relentless pace.

When the finishing line arrived, Great Britain had secured the rainbow jerseys of world champions in emphatic fashion.

The achievement was especially significant because it restored a title Britain had previously won in both 2023 and 2024 before Italy claimed the crown last year.

It also marked Britain’s ninth women’s team pursuit world championship victory since the event was introduced in 2008.

Five British riders shared in the celebrations. Although Boothman, Morris, Couzens and Knight contested the final, Megan Barker had played an important role in the earlier rounds and was also awarded a gold medal.

For Boothman, aged just 19, the victory was a particularly remarkable achievement at her first senior World Championships.

Couzens, 22, was also making her senior World Championships debut, highlighting the exciting young talent emerging through Britain’s cycling programme.

The victory was made even more impressive by the fact that Britain’s winning time was less than two seconds outside the world record of 4:02.808, which the British squad established at the European Championships earlier this year.

And it was not the only British success of an extraordinary day in Shanghai.

Just minutes earlier, Matthew Bostock had claimed gold in the men’s scratch race following a spectacular solo attack, securing his first world championship title.

Britain’s men also added a bronze medal in the team pursuit after defeating France, completing a remarkable day of two gold medals and one bronze for the national squad.

Germany secured bronze in the women’s team pursuit, narrowly defeating the Netherlands.

The championships, which run from 14 to 18 October, have brought together many of the world’s finest track cyclists to compete for the sport’s most prestigious titles.

For Great Britain, the women’s victory represents another chapter in the country’s remarkable history of success on the velodrome.

From established champions to rising young stars, the British team demonstrated the talent, discipline and collective spirit required to compete at the very highest level.

And as five British women stood proudly as world champions in Shanghai, there was another reason for the nation to celebrate.

Another world title. Another gold medal. Another magnificent achievement for Great Britain.

The world champions are British!
