Union Jack bunting, naval pride and the echo of wartime spirit filled the air as the Royal Navy kicked off national celebrations for the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day with a spectacular flight deck street party aboard warship HMS Duncan.
In a moving tribute to the Greatest Generation, the Type 45 destroyer was transformed into a floating festival of remembrance and joy at HM Naval Base Portsmouth, as the countdown begins to VE Day 80 on 5 May.
Hosted in partnership with the Together Coalition, the event welcomed local schoolchildren and Royal Navy cadets aboard the cutting-edge warship for a day of music, food, and history — all aimed at inspiring communities across the UK to organise their own neighbourhood celebrations next month.

The party, held exactly one month before the anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe, was a dazzling show of tradition and unity, bringing young people face-to-face with the legacy of those who fought for peace eight decades ago.
Commander Dan Lee, Captain and Commanding Officer of HMS Duncan, said:
“It’s been great fun to host a VE Day 80 street party on the flight deck today. The Armed Forces will be at the heart of the commemorations in May to help bring people together and give this historic event the celebration it deserves.”
“The Armed Forces are proud to keep alive the spirit of service and sacrifice of the Greatest Generation. In May we’ll remember those who died, thank those who served and recommit to defending the freedom they fought for.”
Set against the backdrop of Portsmouth’s historic naval base, the flight deck was festooned with flags and filled with the chatter of schoolchildren learning about wartime heroism and the importance of remembrance.

The Together Coalition is spearheading the drive to get Britain celebrating VE Day 80 with street parties, family barbecues, village fetes and community picnics on Bank Holiday Monday, 5 May.
This week’s launch event served as a national call to arms — not for conflict, but for community spirit, as the country prepares to unite in gratitude and celebration of the peace secured by those who gave so much.
As Britain looks ahead to a heartfelt and historic VE Day 80, HMS Duncan and her crew have already set the tone — one of remembrance, pride, and a shared duty to honour the past by standing together in the present.
So whether it’s a tea party on your terrace or bunting in your backyard, the message from the Royal Navy is clear: get ready to gather, remember and raise a toast to those who gave us our tomorrow.
