Prime Minister Boris Johnson has today (12 April 2022) made a statement.

Below is a transcript of the speech, exactly as it was delivered:

Today I have received a fixed penalty notice from the Metropolitan Police relating to an event in Downing Street on 19th June 2020, and let me say immediately that I have paid the fine and I once again offer a full apology.

And in a spirit of openness and humility, I want to be completely clear about what happened on that date.

My day began shortly after 7am, and I chaired eight meetings in No10, including the Cabinet Committee deciding Covid strategy, I visited a school in Hemel Hempstead, which took me out of Downing Street for over four hours.

And amongst all these engagements, on a day that happened to be my birthday, there was a brief gathering in the Cabinet Room shortly after 2pm, lasting for less than 10 minutes, during which people I work with kindly passed on their good wishes.

And I have to say in all frankness, at the time, it did not occur to me that this might have been a breach of the rules.

But of course the police have found otherwise and I fully respect the outcome of their investigation.

I understand the anger that many will feel that I myself fell short when it came to observing the very rules which the Government I lead had introduced to protect the public, and I accept in all sincerity that people had a right to expect better.

Now I feel an even greater sense of obligation to deliver on the priorities of the British people:

strengthening our economy,

creating jobs and opportunities,

levelling up the whole United Kingdom,

now, of course, ensuring that Putin fails in Ukraine, and easing the burden imposed on hard-working families caused by higher energy prices.

I will take forward that task with due humility, but with maximum determination to fulfil my duty and do what is best for the country I serve.

  1. I would be pleased to pay the Prime Ministers fine for what was after all a trivial infringement of the rules. He’s doing a brilliant job and there is no one on the horizon capable of replacing him.

  2. I accept our prime minister’s apology, although I don’t feel it was necessary as my support for him and our government has never changed.
I am very proud of him and the support he has offered Ukraine. I also feel any disloyalty by any member of the government at this particular time is both pathetic and dangerous. It is vital that the government remains strong and united while Russia is such a threat to western way of life. Any weakness or discord will encourage more atrocities.

  3. Full apology end of the meter move on. Boris you are a top PM there is no one else that can do the job of PM. 💙💙❤️

  4. I think Sir Starmer has a crime to answer for. Hit and run episode. Reporting to police next day? Party in a pub in lockdown. Failing to charge the Asian groomers and telling the girls to keep their mouths shut, as it would upset the Muslim community. A teacher terrified to go to work after being threatened by a group of parents. Threatening to take his life and walking free. Police just standing by. Bent labour councillors and fraudsters in the labour party, allowed to still take a place in parliament. The benefits taken by the labour MPs all from the tax payers money. And Boris is fined for a piece of cake???

  5. No apology needed, you were at work, the best PM we have had in years , support you you 100%
Now let’s hope they let you get on with running our Country 💯❤️👏👏

  6. In my humble opinion I really cannot see why you have been fined because you haven’t broken any Covid rules , the Police are pandering to the media in their reaction for three years now in bashing you.

Kier Starmer is on video with his colleagues with a bottle of beer in hand and others drinking , why wasn’t he fined it’s a total disgrace to let him off because the media are not interested in bashing him

  7. No apology needed I am really surprised there was a fine. You are doing and have done a fantastic job for our country under extreme circumstances. Best Prime Minister for many years and should be supported. There are a vast amount of people supporting you “the silent majority”. Best wishes to you and know how much support there is for you in the country
