Britain’s sovereign defence manufacturing capability has received a major boost with the opening of a state-of-the-art artillery factory in Sheffield, marking a new chapter for British exports, jobs, and industrial strength.
The new facility, operated by BAE Systems, will make the UK a global hub for advanced artillery production.
The 94,000 sq ft factory, larger than the pitch at Wembley Stadium, firmly establishes Sheffield as the home of UK howitzer production, and will initially focus on building the British-designed M777, the world’s only combat-proven 155mm lightweight howitzer.
The opening is expected to create 200 skilled British jobs, as well as new apprenticeship opportunities. A further 60 UK businesses will benefit through the supply chain, reinforcing the government’s ambition to make defence a cornerstone of national growth and resilience.
The facility’s development was made possible by over £25 million in successful export deals, a testament to the global demand for British defence engineering and the increasing recognition of the UK’s technological leadership in this field.
The facility is not only a win for South Yorkshire but also for national security, as it supports Britain’s ability to rapidly restock key ammunition and fulfil urgent international commitments.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Defence awarded BAE Systems a contract to produce 150 artillery barrels for Ukraine. That work, done in collaboration with Sheffield Forgemasters, reflects how British defence firms are playing a central role in supporting allies while expanding the UK’s sovereign capability.

The factory is expected to be fully operational later this year, with room to expand production lines to meet growing domestic and international demand. Beyond the M777, the site will evolve to develop and manufacture a new generation of world-class combat systems.
