Wrightbus, the Northern Irish manufacturer that has become one of Britain’s great industrial comeback stories, has officially launched operations in Australia, marking yet another triumph for British engineering on the world stage.

The announcement, made during the company’s landmark 80th anniversary year, sees the Ballymena based firm expand into a market it first entered three decades ago with exports to Canberra. It is a moment that speaks to the enduring strength of British manufacturing, proving once again that homegrown innovation, built with pride in Northern Ireland, can compete and win anywhere in the world.

Founded in 1946 as Robert Wright & Son Coachbuilders, the company has grown from humble beginnings re-bodying vehicles into a global leader in zero-emission transport. Since its founding, Wrightbus has consistently led global innovation in low-emission and zero-emission bus technology, introducing multiple world firsts in hydrogen, battery electric, and hybrid buses. That heritage of quiet, determined British ingenuity now underpins a fleet that has collectively travelled more than 200 million emission-free kilometres worldwide.

The Australian venture was officially unveiled by Anna Shotbolt, British Consul General and Deputy Trade Commissioner Asia Pacific (Australia & New Zealand), at the Australasia Bus & Coach Expo in Sydney, a fitting stage for a company built on decades of British craftsmanship to showcase its latest generation of vehicles: the Kite battery electric single decker, the Kite hydrogen fuel cell single decker, both already approved on the TfNSW Procurement Panel, and the StreetDeck 6×2 battery electric double decker, a model that has just won a 20 vehicle order from City Bus in Hong Kong.

Jo Bamford CBE, Executive Chairman of Wrightbus, captured the significance of the moment, saying, “Australia represents a hugely important market for Wrightbus, and we are delighted to be back with a renewed focus and a long-term commitment to supporting the country’s transition to zero-emission public transport.”

Wrightbus Managing Director Christian Reynolds struck a similarly proud note, describing how the company’s experience abroad reflects a philosophy built on partnership rather than mere supply. “Our vehicles are already proving themselves every day in cities around the world, and we’re excited to share that experience with Australian customers. This is about more than supplying buses; it’s about building partnerships, creating ecosystems, supporting jobs and developing sustainable transport solutions for decades to come,” he said. He added, “Collaboration is central to how we operate, enabling us to share the expertise we’ve built delivering zero-emission fleets across the UK, Europe and Asia, while working with partners to understand local needs, share knowledge and develop solutions that deliver lasting impact.”

Anna Shotbolt praised the symbolism of the moment, noting, “As Wrightbus celebrates its 80th anniversary, it is fantastic to see the Northern Irish bus and coach manufacturer returning to Australia to build on a partnership that began more than three decades ago. Combining a proud heritage of British engineering with their zero-emission expertise, Wrightbus will help operators and communities across Australia move toward a cleaner, greener transport future.”

The expansion also reflects the strength of Northern Ireland’s wider industrial revival, an achievement that has drawn national pride and recognition. Richard Ennis, Regional Director for Australia & New Zealand at Invest Northern Ireland, said, “As the economic development agency for Northern Ireland, we are proud to support Wrightbus on its journey into the Australian market, helping the company explore opportunities and building valuable connections across the region. Wrightbus’s growth in Australia demonstrates its strength in advanced manufacturing and clean technology, and we look forward to supporting the company’s continued success in the years ahead.”

Justinian Habner, Head of Asia Pacific at Invest Northern Ireland, echoed that pride in British and Northern Irish industry, saying, “Wrightbus’s launch in Australia demonstrates the growing international demand for Northern Ireland’s expertise in clean transport and sustainable innovation. With governments and operators across Asia Pacific investing in decarbonisation, Wrightbus is ideally positioned to support the transition to zero-emission public transport. We will continue to work with Wrightbus to support the company as it expands its international footprint and to showcase Northern Ireland’s sectoral strengths in clean technology transport throughout Asia-Pacific.”

The scale of the operation underlines just how far the company has travelled since its founding. Wrightbus now manufactures across the UK and Malaysia, employing more than 2,300 people and supporting an extended supply chain worth over £300 million a year, a network that sustains a further 7,500 jobs. It stands today as one of the UK’s leading clean transport success stories, a badge of honour for British manufacturing at a time when the world is racing toward decarbonisation.

Leading the new Australian operation are Daniel Castro, Regional Director Asia Pacific, and Julian Gurney, Head of Sales for Australia & New Zealand, both bringing decades of regional expertise to the task of establishing Wrightbus as a trusted long term partner.

Julian Gurney, who has spent 20 years working in the region including with the Bus Industry Confederation, reflected on the occasion with evident pride, saying, “I am delighted to be back at the Sydney Expo with Wrightbus, a truly historic company, as it seeks to work with operators and partners in Australia and help them deliver their vision for a cleaner, greener transport network. Australia is a highly respected, mature and professional market and it’s really defining its own future. Daniel and I, along with the rest of the Wrightbus team are fully committed to supporting its decarbonisation goals.”

Daniel Castro added a fitting note on the company’s storied past and ambitious future, saying, “With 80 years of engineering heritage behind us and a clear focus on the future, we’re excited to write the next chapter of the Wrightbus story in Australia. We’re not just introducing innovative vehicles, we’re establishing the partnerships and support network needed to help customers succeed as they modernise their fleets.”

From its origins as a small coachbuilder in Ballymena to its current standing as a world leader in zero-emission transport, Wrightbus’s journey into Australia stands as a proud reminder of what British and Northern Irish engineering can achieve when ambition meets craftsmanship, and of the global reach that homegrown innovation continues to command 80 years on.
