British hydrogen specialist to build world’s largest electrolyser gigafactory in Sheffield

ITM Power will build the world’s largest electrolyser production facility in Sheffield creating more that 300 high tech jobs.

The £250 million expansion programme will see the British manufacturer open its second factory in the city by the end of 2023.

The new facility will be built next to the firm’s existing factory on Bessemer Park in Tinsley which is already the largest of its kind in the world. However, Gigafactory 2.0 will dwarf it’s existing sibling, with 50 per cent more production capacity.

ITM Power make carbon-free fuel that can be used to power cars, homes and industry by making electrolysers that split water to create hydrogen. The company currently employs 360 people and is valued at £2.38bn.

Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said:

“Hydrogen has the potential to provide a third of the UK’s energy in the future. Our first-ever Hydrogen Strategy sets out how we will back this technology, ramp up domestic production and create a new, British industry that will thrive over the next decade and beyond.

“ITM Power is at the forefront of manufacturing green hydrogen and its world-leading technologies are already playing an important role in cutting emissions as the UK moves away from fossil fuels, helping us meet our climate commitments, while creating thousands of high-quality jobs and unlocking billions-of-pounds of private investment.”

The hydrogen sector is riding high after the Government promised to boost hi-tech green sectors post-Brexit.
