A pioneering new British research institute is set to transform the lives of millions suffering from chronic wounds, while saving the NHS billions of pounds and reinforcing the UK’s position at the forefront of medical innovation.
The University of Hull has unveiled plans for a £48 million Wound Innovation Institute, a major new centre dedicated to tackling one of the country’s most overlooked health challenges.
More than two million people across the UK live with chronic wounds every year, often enduring persistent pain, reduced mobility, social isolation and lengthy treatment. The condition places a staggering £8.3 billion burden on the NHS annually, exceeding the costs associated with cancer and obesity.
Now, backed by investment from UK Research and Innovation and supported by leading industry partners, the institute aims to accelerate the development of new treatments that could help wounds heal faster, improve recovery after surgery and ease pressure on frontline health services.
Science Minister Lord Vallance said the project would help deliver a modern health service capable of improving outcomes for patients while making better use of NHS resources.
The institute will bring together scientists, clinicians and industry experts to translate laboratory discoveries into practical treatments that can benefit patients across Britain.
Professor Matthew Hardman, Director of the Wound Innovation Institute, said chronic wounds have imposed a hidden but devastating toll on both patients and the healthcare system for many years.
He said the new centre’s mission is to deliver world-class research that leads directly to better care, quicker recovery and reduced strain on NHS services.
The University of Hull secured £16 million through the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund to establish the facility, with further backing from industry partners including Polaroid Therapeutics and Reckitt.
Researchers will investigate why wounds heal poorly in older people and those living with diabetes, while also exploring how the skin’s natural microbiome, the community of beneficial bacteria that lives on the body, can help protect against infection and support healing.
Scientists are also examining alternatives to conventional antibiotics, using advanced genomic technologies to develop more targeted therapies at a time when antimicrobial resistance is becoming an increasing global threat.
Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Executive Chair of Research England, described chronic wounds as a major yet often unseen burden for both patients and the NHS.
She said the new institute combines scientific excellence, clinical expertise and industry collaboration in a way that could deliver meaningful improvements for millions of people.
Among the most promising projects is work aimed at helping amputees recover more quickly following limb loss.
Many patients fitted with prosthetic limbs experience significant discomfort during the first year after amputation because the shape of their residual limb changes rapidly, often rendering prosthetic sockets unsuitable and forcing lengthy waits for replacements.
Researchers are now testing a heat-remouldable prosthetic socket that can be adjusted as the limb heals. The technology could reduce delays, minimise discomfort and help patients regain mobility sooner.
One such device, known as the Confidence Socket and developed by Amparo Prosthetics, has already demonstrated success in demanding humanitarian environments, including use during the conflict in Gaza.
Working alongside NHS partners, researchers are launching a new study to assess whether the adaptable technology can shorten recovery times and improve rehabilitation outcomes for amputees in the UK.
Another area of focus is the use of ultrasound therapy to treat diabetic foot ulcers, a painful condition affecting an estimated 90,000 people nationwide.
These ulcers can severely restrict mobility, impact employment and, in severe cases, lead to lower-limb amputation.
Early evidence suggests ultrasound treatment may accelerate healing while reducing costs compared with traditional approaches, offering fresh hope to thousands of patients.
As Britain continues to invest in cutting-edge medical science, the new institute represents a major step forward in addressing a condition that has too often remained in the shadows.
For millions living with chronic wounds, the promise is simple but profound: less pain, faster healing and a better quality of life.
