Large parts of the internet experienced severe disruption early this morning after Cloudflare, a major provider of web infrastructure, reported a significant technical issue affecting multiple customers.
As a result, users across several major platforms including X (formerly Twitter), Spotify, PayPal, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and OpenAI, reported that they were unable to access their accounts or load key site functions.
Some issues first surfaced around 4am. But at noon here in the UK, thousands of users quickly turned to social media to flag problems ranging from login failures to complete service outages.
Cloudflare Confirms Ongoing Investigation
Cloudflare initially acknowledged it was “aware of troubles” affecting its systems, but later issued a more detailed statement outlining the scale of the incident.
“We are working to understand the full impact and mitigate this problem. More updates to follow shortly.”
The company added that the issue “potentially impacts multiple customers,” though the exact cause and scope of the outage remain unclear.
Users Report App Crashes
Among the services disrupted, Spotify saw a significant spike in complaints. Users said the music streaming app would not open at all, immediately crashing back to the device’s home screen.
Impact Spreads to X, PayPal, AWS, and OpenAI
Reports of outages extended across major online platforms:
- X users reported timelines failing to load and login issues.
- PayPal customers said they were unable to complete transactions.
- AWS, a backbone for countless online services, showed signs of service degradation.
- OpenAI users were unable to access some platforms and tools.
The widespread disruption highlights Cloudflare’s critical role in keeping the modern internet running smoothly. With the company still investigating the root cause, many of the affected services remain partially or fully offline.
Cloudflare says further details will be released as soon as they are available.
