The last government rightly made tackling fly-tipping a core pillar of its Anti-Social Behaviour Action Plan, but the reality on the ground is that responsibility lies with local authorities. That means your local council has the power — and duty — to take decisive action.
Last year alone, more than 1 million incidents of fly-tipping were recorded across England. And yet this figure fails to capture the true scale of the crisis, especially in rural areas where the burden falls on individuals to shoulder the cost and clean-up.
So, we must ask: Is your council doing enough?
There are practical, effective steps local councils can take — today — to clamp down on this scourge. Ask your local councillors:
- Are they issuing fixed penalty notices to catch and deter offenders?
- Are they promoting the household duty of care, so that residents understand they are legally responsible for ensuring their waste is disposed of properly?
- Are all Council Enforcement Officers accredited under the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme, giving them enhanced powers to tackle littering and related offences?
These aren’t radical measures — they’re common sense. But too many councils are failing to use the tools already at their disposal.
We must hold them to account.
