Women’s sport investment is set to be boosted by a new scheme launched by the Department for Business and Trade, the Women’s Sport Investment Accelerator. A green tech start-up has developed a process to recycle end-of-life body armour fibres, which could retain high-quality protection for soldiers, reduce emissions and save money. Employment in the UK’s games development sector has surged by 11.4 per cent, while studio numbers have increased by almost 18 per cent, according to new figures released this week by TIGA, the trade association representing the UK video games industry. A stretch of rugged Cornish coastline that borders the medieval fortress of Tintagel has been acquired by the National Trust to look after on behalf of the nation. Smith’s Cliff, on the north Cornwall coast, will be cared for by the conservation charity as a space for wildlife to flourish, for heritage to be conserved and for people to access and enjoy for ever. 15. Export dreams come true as government support secures £2.5 million funding for UK bed manufacturer
The UK government has secured a £2.5m funding package alongside Santander UK to help Dewsbury furniture manufacturer Jay-Be fuel its export growth. UK Export Finance, a government department which exists to help UK firms win, deliver and get paid for export contracts, provided support for the bed and mattress specialist by issuing a General Export Facility (GEF) loan guarantee. Scientists and engineers at world-leading UK Atomic Energy Authority’s JET facility will run its third and final experiments using tritium. The start of the final deuterium-tritium experiments at the Joint European Torus (JET) have been taking place today at the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) in Culham, Oxfordshire. 11. Government teams up with Great British sport stars to launch new physical activity drive
The Government will join forces with former sports stars, health professionals and fitness experts to help an additional 3.5 million adults and children get physically active by 2030, as part of a major national activity drive. BAE Systems, the major British manufacturer of aircraft, missiles, avionics, and other aerospace and defense products has signed agreements with the Ukrainian Government to ramp up the Company’s support to Ukraine’s armed forces. Britain’s biggest warship set sail this week for her autumn deployment – her longest yet, pushing the limits of aircraft carrier operations with drones, fifth-generation stealth fighters, tilt-rotors and helicopters. Leading military trauma surgeons from the UK’s Defence Medical Services and the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine have been sharing their skills with Ukrainian medical personnel. 7. 100,000 more homes to be built via reform of defective EU laws
Over 100,000 homes held up due to defective EU laws will be unblocked between now and 2030, delivering an estimated £18 billion boost to the economy, the government has announced this week. Currently, legacy EU laws on nutrient neutrality are blocking the delivery of new homes, including cases where planning permission has already been granted. Nutrients entering our rivers are a real problem, but the contribution made by new homes is very small. Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Josh Kerr led Great Britain to a glorious ten medal haul at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, as British Athletics equalled their best-ever outing at the event. Two-time Olympic heptathlete, Johnson-Thompson soared to an incredible gold in Budapest, adding to her 2019 title in brilliant fashion after a personal best in the javelin and a 6740-point performance. 4. Offenders to be ordered to attend sentencing
Cowardly criminals who try to evade the final moment of justice will be ordered into the dock to attend their sentencing – and will face longer behind bars if they refuse to appear. The reforms announced this week will create a new power for judges to order an offender to attend their hearings and make it clear – in law – that force can be used to make sure this happens. 3. Major drive to create new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK
As part of a major drive to create a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK, steps to further speed up preparations to make the site at Sizewell C in Suffolk shovel-ready have been announced. Ministers this week have made available a further £341 million of previously allocated funding for development work on the project. 2. WORLD FIRST’s cancer jab that cuts treatment time by up to 75% to be rolled out by NHS England
Drug treatment times for some NHS cancer patients will be slashed by up to three quarters, thanks to an anti-cancer injection that takes as little as seven minutes to administer. Following the green light from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the NHS in England will be the first health system in the world to roll out the seven-minute injection to hundreds of patients each year… click here
1. GREAT BRITISH INNOVATION: JCB makes major hydrogen combustion technology breakthrough
JCB has made a second major breakthrough in proving the wider appeal of hydrogen combustion technology by installing one of its super-efficient hydrogen engines into a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van. The white van retrofit was completed in just two weeks and one of the vehicle’s first test drivers was JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford, who is leading the company’s £100 million hydrogen engine project. The internal combustion engine used in the van is the same as those already powering prototype JCB construction and agricultural machines… click here
