London paused in solemn remembrance this weekend as the 85th Battle of Britain memorial service was held at The Royal Air Force Memorial on the Victoria Embankment.
The ceremony paid tribute to the airmen immortalised by Winston Churchill as “The Few,” who, in the summer and autumn of 1940, stood as Britain’s shield against the Nazi onslaught.
The service was led by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Harvey Smyth, who was joined by senior representatives of the Royal Australian Air Force, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and the New Zealand Defence Force. Each laid wreaths in memory of their countrymen who fought, and many who fell, over Britain’s skies during the decisive campaign.
Adding to the dignity of the occasion, the King’s Colour Squadron performed their role with characteristic precision, carrying wreaths with the discipline that has long symbolised the professionalism of the Royal Air Force. Veterans, serving personnel, and members of the public gathered in silent reflection, ensuring that the courage and sacrifice of those who served are never forgotten.
The Battle of Britain, fought between July and October 1940, remains one of the most pivotal episodes in the nation’s history. Facing overwhelming odds, young pilots of the RAF, bolstered by Commonwealth and Allied airmen, turned back the Luftwaffe and thwarted Hitler’s plans for invasion. It was then that Churchill delivered his unforgettable tribute in the House of Commons: “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”

As wreaths lay upon the Embankment memorial, the service reminded all in attendance that the Battle of Britain was more than a clash of aircraft—it was a battle for national survival, freedom, and the future of Europe. The bravery of “The Few” not only safeguarded Britain in 1940 but also inspired generations that followed.
Eighty-five years on, their sacrifice continues to echo through history, a timeless reminder that courage and unity can turn the tide against tyranny.
