Pride and pageantry filled the air in Harrogate as more than 700 young soldiers took a major step forward in their military careers at the Army Foundation College (AFC) Harrogate’s summer pass out parade.

The event, held on 7 August, marked the end of months of intense training for the 16- and 17-year-old recruits, who have now successfully completed Phase One of their Army journey.

VIP guest Gareth Southgate, former England men’s football manager, conducted the inspection of the graduating troops, adding further honour to the occasion.

For the graduates, the parade was the culmination of a year of rigorous preparation — from physical fitness and weapon handling to education, teamwork, and leadership skills. Training also included a demanding two-week battle camp and tactical exercise designed to simulate the realities of operational service.

“This is a proud day for each and every one of them,” said a senior officer at the college. “They have shown determination, discipline, and resilience, qualities that will serve them well as soldiers of the British Army.”

In front of a crowd of over 5,000 family members and friends, the soldiers marched with precision onto the parade square, demonstrating the skills and discipline they had honed over the past year. The occasion was not only a celebration of achievement but also a symbolic rite of passage as the young men and women prepared to move on to Phase Two — trade training in their chosen specialisms within their respective regiments and corps.

The Army Foundation College Harrogate has a proud record of shaping the next generation of soldiers, instilling values of courage, loyalty, and commitment. For these graduates, the pass out parade is more than the end of basic training — it is the beginning of a lifetime of service.

As the final notes of the military band echoed across the parade square, the message was clear: the future of the British Army is in capable hands.
