Political Editor Robert Peston has been forced into a grovelling apology after he falsely claimed Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s ethics adviser quit over a plan to help firms linked to the Conservative Party.
Thanks to a flurry of complaints from Media Watchers which were sent to Downing Street, a complaint swiftly followed straight from No 10 to ITV bosses over the message posted to Peston’s 1.2 million Twitter followers yesterday.
Peston wrote the ‘only conclusion to be drawn’ was that Lord Geidt resigned after being asked to approve ‘tariffs being imposed to help companies with connections to the Conservative Party or ministers’.
The ITV News political editor was then forced to apologise saying:
Conservative MP Lee Anderson said:
‘Peston is a very poor journalist that irritates the hell out of people in areas like Ashfield (in Nottinghamshire). He is clearly out of touch on all levels but we all know he is part of the media witch hunt to get rid of Boris.’
Conservative MP Mark Jenkinson added:
‘Peston is a perfect example of the ‘Remainia’ that continues to prevent some journalists from simply reporting facts.’
Thank you to everyone who reported Peston’s tweet.
It’s time to hold the mainstream media to account. We want a fair and honest press, non-biased news programs and non-partisan presenters on platforms such as the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky News.
If you see any “mistakes” in the mainstream media please report them to us:
