“This brilliant bloke who served Queen and Country should never have been dragged through the courts.”

Colonel Bob Stewart MP, a military hero has had his conviction for a racially aggravated public order offence quashed at Southwark Crown Court today (Friday).

Having been abused, harassed and slandered in the street whilst going about his business as a Member of Parliament, Colonel Bob Stewart was bizarrely reported, charged and then convicted of a ‘racially aggravated public order offence’ for his response, which was none of the sort.

Colonel Stewart, a man who served in the Army for nearly 30 years, including stints in Northern Ireland and Bosnia and the recipient of a Distinguished Service Order, was then fined £600 by Westminster Magistrates’ Court and ordered to pay legal costs of £835.

After a video of the incident surfaced, many were appalled at the conviction for what was simply a polite request for somebody to go away and conduct their protest somewhere else where it would be more appropriate.

The Conservative Post at the time ran an appeal for the former MP and said: “It is a disgrace to see a case such as this going to court, let alone for a decorated military hero and veteran, such as Colonel Stewart.”

Mr Stewart, who was a Conservative at the time, was convicted last November for a racially aggravated public order offence in relation to the incident. Mr Stewart was also forced to surrendered the Conservative whip while he appealed his conviction.

However, his conviction has now been overturned following an appeal.

Former Conservative Party Chairman Lee Anderson MP took to Twitter / X to celebrate saying: “War Hero Bob. My good friend Bob Stewart has had his conviction quashed. This brilliant bloke who served Queen and Country should never have been dragged through the courts.”
