The King has sent a heartfelt message of congratulations to the England team, urging them to secure victory against Spain in the Euro 2024 final without the nail-biting drama of last-minute wonder goals or penalties.

His Majesty conveyed his message to manager Gareth Southgate and the team at 10pm, just five minutes after England’s thrilling 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in Dortmund, Germany.

He said: “My wife and I join all our family in wishing you the warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the Uefa European Championship – and in sending our very best wishes for Sunday’s match.

“If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last-minute wonder goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated! Good luck, England. Charles R.”

Moments later, the Prince of Wales, President of the Football Association, celebrated Ollie Watkins’ stunning 90th-minute goal that clinched the win. He posted on Twitter: “What a beauty, Ollie! Congratulations England! Finalists. W.”

Prince William, who was in Germany to witness England’s quarter-final triumph against Switzerland on Saturday is expected to return for the Euro final on Sunday.
