In a display of pomp and pageantry, King Charles III has welcomed His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain to Windsor Castle, where the Bahraini monarch was greeted with a grand ceremonial reception.
The visit, which underscores the enduring ties between Britain and one of its closest Middle Eastern allies, featured a spectacular Guard of Honour by the Welsh Guards.
As the royal entourage gathered, the Band of the Welsh Guards performed the Bahraini National Anthem, followed by the lowering of the Sovereign’s Colour. In a gesture of respect and ceremony, the Captain of the Guard addressed King Hamad in Arabic, inviting him to inspect both ranks of the Guard of Honour. The inspection was conducted side by side with King Charles, who guided his Bahraini counterpart along the line of impeccably turned-out soldiers.
The Welsh Guards, after receiving a ‘Royal Salute, Present Arms,’ marched past the two monarchs, offering a smart “eyes left” salute. The impressive display concluded as the band led the Guard of Honour through the George IV gate, marking the end of the outdoor ceremonies.
Following the formalities, King Hamad took the opportunity to present awards to distinguished members of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery. The coveted Princess Elizabeth Cup for the best turned-out trooper and the Royal Artillery Best Gun Team Award were among the prizes presented by the Bahraini King.
The two Sovereigns then retired into the historic castle for private talks and refreshments, continuing a relationship that has been bolstered by close strategic ties, particularly in the field of defence. Bahrain, which hosts a key British naval base, remains a crucial partner in ensuring regional stability.
King Hamad, who was educated in the UK at Applegarth School in Surrey and The Leys School, Cambridge, has strong personal ties to Britain. His military training included time at the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, followed by further instruction in the United States, further cementing his enduring connection to the UK.
The visit serves as a testament to the deep and enduring relationship between Britain and Bahrain, with the ceremony reflecting the strength of their diplomatic, cultural, and defence partnerships.
