Keir Starmer claims he wants to shut down hotels for illegal migrants. His ministers churn out solemn promises about “taking back control.”
But when push comes to shove, when councils and residents demand closure, he dips into your pocket to bankroll his lefty lawyers to march into court to keep those very hotels open.
Welcome to the Starmer paradox: tough talk for the headlines, soft hands in the courtroom.
Today, the Court of Appeal ruled that the Bell Hotel in Epping must continue housing migrants, despite the council’s objections, despite local fury, despite the promises of ministers. Residents wanted the site shut. The council wanted the site shut. But Labour fought tooth and nail to keep it running. And they won.
So much for democracy. So much for local consent.
Ben Habib, Leader of Advance UK summed it up well on Twitter / X saying: “He says he wants to shut illegal migrant hotels but Keir Starmer fights tooth and nail to keep them open. Against the wishes of local residents and the local authority the Epping hotel will now stay open. So much for democracy and the security of British citizens. Illegal migrants are more important to Starmer. The govt in contempt of the people – again.”
And of course contracts are being handed out for five, even seven years. So let’s be honest: there is no plan under Labour to stop this. The political establishment has decided. They see it as cheaper, easier, and legally safer to warehouse thousands in hotels than to confront the problem at its source.
Also remember, the first thing Labour did when they got into power was to kill the Conservative’s Rwanda plan… JUST at it was ready to roll. Of course, President Trump is now making good use of it and Labour are welcoming more illegal migrants into our country than ever before.
And what about safety? Locals ask a simple question: should their right to feel secure in their own neighbourhood be trumped by the “rights” of those who have not even had their asylum claims processed? The answer from government lawyers is clear: yes. Migrants’ claims under the European Convention on Human Rights come first. The people of Epping, and the thousands of towns like it, come second.
Article 5 of that very convention guarantees the right to liberty and security. Yet it seems the “security of person” is a right reserved not for British citizens, but for those who have crossed illegally and claimed asylum.
This is not compassion. It is contempt. Contempt for residents. Contempt for democracy. Contempt for the very people ministers are supposed to serve.
Starmer’s Government has a choice. It could back communities. It could put citizens first. It could stop the revolving door of lawyers, appeals, and court orders that make Britain a permanent halfway house for the world. Instead, it fights its own voters in court to keep hotels open against their will.
Never forget that. Never forgive it either.
Because when the people cry out for security and consent, and the Government sides with bureaucracy and loopholes, the contempt is mutual.
Anyone else have a feeling this isn’t going to end well?
