The astonishing remarks from Powell come as Labour pushes ahead with plans to cede control of the Chagos Islands—including Diego Garcia—to Mauritius, despite grave warnings from both British and American military experts.
As part of this reckless giveaway, Mauritius would gain complete sovereignty, and the UK would lose all control over the islands—including the ability to extend the US military lease. Shockingly, the new deal even allows Mauritius the right to veto any future lease extensions, handing a dangerous level of power to a government increasingly within China’s sphere of influence.
It is little wonder that Donald Trump’s administration is alarmed. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has already called Labour’s deal “a serious threat to our national security interests in the Indian Ocean”.
