LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: £14.7 million for new film studios in Kent

Over £14.7 million from the Levelling Up Fund has been allocated to Ashford for support the creation of new international film studios in Kent.

The planned studios will sit on a 4.8-hectare (11.9 acres) brownfield site with five Grade II listed buildings forming part of a digital industry hub, bringing new jobs to the area for local people.

The site was previously the old Newton Railway Works and will be developed with several partners including: Ashford International Development Company, a Joint Venture between Ashford Borough Council, Quinn Estates, a film and TV studios operator and the EKC Group.

Although no specific operator has been confirmed, Netflix, Amazon and HBO have all been linked with the project.

Four film studios are so far included in the plan, as well as an 18-storey hotel, 300 flats, commercial units, a rooftop restaurant and a 383-space multi-storey car park.

Alongside the studio space, the funding will help to deliver a residential development, a new educational facility and commercial premises.

It will form part of a digital industry hub in Kent, bringing new jobs to the area for local people.
