Oxford Union No-Confidence Vote Delayed After Count Suspended Amid Intimidation Claims

Wondering why the Oxford Union has yet to publish the results of Saturday’s no-confidence vote to remove its embattled president-elect George Abaraonye?

According to an official notice posted on the Union’s county room, the Extraordinary Returning Officer said he was forced to “informally suspend” the count on Monday after facing “obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility” from several representatives at the count.

The officer, from Corpus Christi College, said the behaviour created “an impossible working atmosphere,” making it untenable to continue. He described the treatment of election officials as “utterly unacceptable.”

The Returning Officer’s decision was not due to any procedural error or irregularity in the vote itself, but because of the conduct of those present. He stressed that the Oxford Union “is fundamentally a democratic institution” and that members’ votes “must be heard.”

The count is expected to resume under stricter conditions, with disruptive representatives barred from returning. Proxy votes, including those from alumni, will be validated without campaign observers. If either side fails to send new representatives, a neutral official will be appointed.

Many members have expressed frustration over the delay, warning that the lack of results could damage confidence in the Union’s democratic processes. “For the results to take this long is scandalous,” one member said, “and if not sorted soon it will cast suspicion over the whole process and further bring the Union into disrepute – especially as the delay seems to involve the proxy votes of alumni.”

The incident has sparked anger across the university. “Appalling,” one observer commented, “but appalling is a term one naturally associates with Abaraonye and his supporters.”

Others have praised the Extraordinary Returning Officer for standing firm under pressure. “Kudos to him for standing his ground,” said another member. “I hope he is getting the support and protection he needs.”

The Oxford Union has not yet confirmed when the final results of the no-confidence vote will be published.
