PopCon to Visit Nuneaton as Part of Nationwide Tour Advocating Democratic Reform

A political campaign group founded by one of Britain’s most prominent free-market advocates is making its way to Nuneaton as part of a national push for greater democratic accountability.

Popular Conservatism (PopCon), launched in February 2024 by Mark Littlewood, former Director General of the Institute of Economic Affairs, will be hosting an event in the town on Thursday, June 12th at 7.00pm.

The evening will feature a Q&A session and interviews with Annunziata Rees-Mogg, Head of Communications and former MEP, and Andrew Allison, Head of Campaigns.

Annunziata Rees-Mogg, Head of Communications and former MEP, and Andrew Allison, Head of Campaigns.

PopCon’s message centres on what it sees as a democratic deficit in the UK’s governance. In a statement ahead of the event, Rees-Mogg and Allison said:

“If you wonder why nothing appears to work in Britain, you only have to look at the way it is governed. Brexit was about taking back control. We did take back control from the European Union, but we also need to take back control from unelected Quangos, committees, judges and civil servants.

We are campaigning for a restoration of full democratic accountability to Parliament and are looking forward to explaining to people in Nuneaton how this can be achieved.”

PopCon has already made stops in Birmingham and Dudley, with Wolverhampton next on its itinerary. Alongside Littlewood, Rees-Mogg and Allison, the campaign boasts a high-profile roster of speakers including Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, former MP and Cabinet Minister, and Dr David Starkey, the noted historian and broadcaster.

The group’s efforts in the West Midlands are being coordinated by former MEP Bill Etheridge.

The event is open to the public, and residents interested in attending are encouraged to get in touch with Clare Golby via email at Clare.golby@outlook.com.

PopCon’s arrival in Nuneaton marks another step in its drive to engage communities across the UK on issues of governance, accountability, and democratic reform.
