A newly released snap of President Trump’s office shows the iconic bronze bust, sculpted by British-American artist Sir Jacob Epstein, back in its rightful spot by the Oval Office fireplace. The bust was previously booted out by Joe Biden in 2021, sparking outrage on both sides of the Atlantic.
The sculpture, originally a gift from the British government in 2001, has been at the centre of a long-running political tug-of-war. It was first placed in the Oval Office by George W. Bush, only to be controversially sidelined by Barack Obama in 2008, who relocated it to a less prominent position outside the Treaty Room.
At the time, Boris Johnson—then Mayor of London—blasted Obama’s move, suggesting it stemmed from an “ancestral dislike of the British Empire.”
But in 2017, Trump returned the great wartime leader to the heart of the White House, only for Biden to once again snub the bust in favour of American civil rights icons Rosa Parks and Cesar Chavez. Now, with Trump back at the helm, Churchill’s resolute features have made a triumphant return.
