Prime Minister Boris Johnson: Putin must fail

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has today (5 March 2022) released the following letter:

Putin must fail.

That is the message I have delivered time and time again when speaking here at home and to our allies around the world.

Just over a week ago, Russia invaded its free and sovereign neighbour Ukraine.

I remember speaking to President Zelenskyy at 4am as the first missiles struck his beautiful and innocent country and its brave people.

I repeat what I said then – the United Kingdom’s support for Ukraine is unwavering.

And we are leading from the front:

  • Freezing the assets of Putin, Sergey Lavrov and multiple Russian oligarchs
  • Cutting off Russian businesses from UK markets and banks from SWIFT
  • Providing £220 million to Ukraine in humanitarian aid
  • Bolstering our visa support to those fleeing Ukraine
  • Banning Russian planes and ships from our airspace and ports
  • Guaranteed $500 million in economic support for Ukraine
  • Standing alongside our NATO allies in Estonia and Poland
  • Sanctioning the regime in Belarus for aiding in the invasion

Putin’s evil actions cannot go unpunished and that is why the UK has lead calls for the International Criminal Court to investigate Russia’s war crimes.

This Government is determined to go much further, with new legislation being introduced to further cut Russia from our financial markets.

Every day we see the courage and bravery of the Ukrainian people in the face of constant bombardment in a conflict condemned by the world.

Rarely has the contrast between right and wrong been so stark.

That is why Putin must fail.

Yours sincerely,

Boris Johnson

Prime Minister
Leader of the Conservative Party
