The Princess of Wales has delighted the nation with a surprise and deeply touching appearance alongside her daughter Princess Charlotte in the opening moments of her Together at Christmas carol service broadcast, offering a heartfelt celebration of family, music and togetherness.
In a scene rich with warmth and tradition, the Princess sat beside her 10 year old daughter at a Steinway grand piano in the Inner Hall of Windsor Castle.
The mother and daughter duo, who regularly play together at home, performed Holm Sound, a moving piece by composer Erland Cooper, to open the programme.
As the gentle notes filled the historic hall, viewers could hear the Princess reading aloud from the letter she sent to guests invited to her annual carol service at Westminster Abbey on Dec 5. In her message, she reflected that Christmas is about celebrating simple acts of care rather than sentimental or grand gestures, a message that resonated powerfully in the festive season.
The broadcast also captured the arrival of distinguished guests, including Prince Michael of Kent, national treasure Mary Berry and acclaimed actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, best known for his role in Love Actually.
In another charming moment, the Wales family, including Prince William and Princes George, 12, and Louis, seven, were seen hanging red paper chains bearing their names on a connection tree outside the abbey, symbolising unity, kindness and shared values.
Cooper, an award winning composer and producer from the Orkney Islands, joined the Princess and Charlotte earlier this month at her request to film the special segment. He composed Holm Sound at the height of the Covid pandemic, drawing inspiration from the rugged beauty of the Orkneys and the restorative power of nature.
The composer shares a deep love of the natural world with the Princess of Wales, who first wrote to him to express her appreciation for his music and to thank him for his commitment to celebrating nature through his art.
The idea for the unique performance was born after the Princess told Cooper how much she enjoyed teaching his compositions to her daughter at home, forging a special bond through music.
Cooper, 43, said their early conversations were warm and creative and led to an invitation to Windsor Castle. He recalled the Princess asking if it would be acceptable for them to perform the piece together, a request he described as a privilege.
He said he was honoured to witness the remarkable bond between mother and daughter, adding that there was a touching coincidence in that the piece was dedicated to his own mother, who is also called Charlotte.
Reflecting on their shared outlook, Cooper said both he and the Princess are drawn to music that celebrates the natural world, its renewal and its quiet wonder. He described the composition as a small piece of music that seemed to land gently on her shoulder like a bird.
This is not the first time the Princess of Wales has impressed the public with her piano playing. Her previous performances include the opening sequence of the 2023 Eurovision final, when she played in a flowing blue Jenny Packham gown in a show of support for Ukraine.
Her first public performance came on Christmas Eve 2021 during her televised carol concert at Westminster Abbey, where she accompanied singer Tom Walker, who later said she completely nailed it.
On witnessing the shared performance by Kate and Charlotte, Cooper said the moment was simply lovely, adding that Princess Charlotte played beautifully despite the presence of cameras and the composer himself. Together, he said, they were able to celebrate something truly special, a quiet but powerful expression of family, music and the enduring spirit of Christmas.
