Quantum boom: Four British start-ups racing to revolutionise cancer treatment, finance and the future of computing

Britain’s brightest scientific minds are racing to harness the power of quantum technology, and now four trailblazing start-ups are stepping into the spotlight with ambitions to reshape everything from cancer treatment to global data systems.

In a major boost for the UK’s booming tech sector, the quartet has joined the DeepTech Catalyst Quantum incubator programme, known as DTC Quantum, where they will work to transform cutting-edge research into real-world breakthroughs.

The programme, led by the Science and Technology Facilities Council in partnership with the UK Research and Innovation National Quantum Computing Centre at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, is designed to fast-track bold ideas from concept to commercial success.

With access to advanced facilities, expert guidance, funding and tailored business support, these firms are aiming to turn the once theoretical promise of quantum computing into practical solutions that could touch millions of lives.

Meet the pioneers driving change

Among the innovators is Curenetics, a company on a mission to revolutionise cancer treatment.

By combining quantum technology with artificial intelligence, its system can identify the safest and most promising cancer vaccine targets far faster than traditional approaches, potentially shaving years off development timelines.

Meanwhile, Coherence Engine is tackling one of quantum computing’s biggest hurdles, making the machines easier to build and scale.

Its software allows engineers to design and test control systems in a virtual environment before deploying them on real hardware, cutting both risk and cost.

AmorphiQ is taking on challenges that push beyond the limits of conventional AI.

Blending quantum computing with artificial intelligence, it is working on complex data problems such as predicting material degradation and forecasting financial markets.

And Qascade is rethinking how data moves altogether.

The company is developing ultra-fast, low energy methods of transmitting information using light instead of electricity, a leap that could transform data centres and future quantum systems alike.

A powerhouse for economic growth

The DTC Quantum initiative forms part of the wider DeepTech Catalyst network, recently ranked among Europe’s top small and medium enterprise hubs for 2026 by the Financial Times.

Since its launch in 2011, the programme has supported more than 230 start-ups, which have collectively raised over £300 million in private investment, created around 1,100 high-skilled jobs and achieved an impressive 95 per cent survival rate.

Even more striking, it is estimated to generate £25 in economic return for every £1 invested, contributing around £150 million in gross value added to the UK economy each year.

“These four pioneering start-ups are not just tackling today’s toughest challenges, they are redefining what is possible, from accelerating cancer research and transforming financial forecasting, to unlocking entirely new levels of scalability and energy efficiency in quantum computing.

Through DTC Quantum, and in line with the Government’s Modern Industrial Strategy, STFC is backing a new generation of bold, high-growth quantum businesses that are turning cutting-edge research into commercial success.

In doing so, we are not just keeping pace with the quantum revolution, we’re enabling UK businesses to drive it on the global stage, creating high-skilled jobs and supporting economic growth for the UK.”

Fueling Britain’s quantum future

The initiative also plays a key role in supporting the Government’s Modern Industrial Strategy, targeting sectors with the highest growth potential while strengthening economic resilience, delivering net zero and boosting regional development.

Dr Simon Plant, Deputy Director for Innovation at the National Quantum Computing Centre, said:

“Programmes like DeepTech Catalyst Quantum incubator programme (DTC Quantum) show how the UK can turn quantum research into real-world impact.

By supporting innovative start-ups with the tools, expertise and partnerships they need, we are helping accelerate the commercialisation of quantum technologies and strengthen the UK’s quantum ecosystem.”

Backing bold ideas with real support

Start-ups accepted into the programme receive between £50,000 and £100,000 in targeted research and development funding, along with vouchers to collaborate with public sector partners.

They also benefit from up to 50 hours of business support, including coaching, investment readiness, market validation and intellectual property advice, as well as introductions to investors and key industry stakeholders.

With Britain positioning itself at the forefront of the quantum revolution, these four start-ups could soon turn science fiction into everyday reality, and cement the UK’s place as a global leader in next-generation technology.
