RAF Digby, the UK’s oldest operational RAF station, is set to receive a £65 million investment to provide 276 modern single-occupancy bedrooms for junior ranks.
The contract, awarded by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) to Galliford Try, with Arcadis as the Technical Support Provider, promises to deliver high-quality, sustainable accommodation at the historic Lincolnshire base.
The station, which dates back to 1918 and is now operated by Strategic Command, will soon boast four brand-new accommodation blocks, each designed with modern amenities to improve the lived experience for personnel.
Comfort and Convenience for Junior Ranks
The new blocks will feature:
- 69 ensuite single rooms per block
- Kitchenettes
- Drying rooms and laundry facilities
- Social spaces for relaxation and camaraderie
Sustainability at the Forefront
As part of the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to reaching net zero, the buildings will be equipped with cutting-edge, environmentally-friendly features:
- Solar panels for renewable energy generation
- Air source heat pumps for heating
- Shower wastewater heat recovery systems
- Temperature-controlled heating zones
- Energy-efficient LED lighting
- Electric vehicle charging points
The project will also include car parking, street lighting, and landscaped outdoor communal areas, creating a comfortable and energy-efficient living environment for RAF personnel.
Excitement Builds Across the Station
The announcement has been met with enthusiasm by those stationed at RAF Digby.
John Weatherby, Principal Project Manager at DIO, expressed his satisfaction with the project’s progress:
“It’s fantastic to have reached this important milestone in our goal to transform the accommodation provision at RAF Digby with some high-quality new rooms for junior ranks serving at the station. We look forward to working with Galliford Try on the designs as we prepare for the start of construction in the coming months.”
The sentiment was echoed by Wing Commander Neil Hallett, RAF Digby’s Station Commander:
“This is an eagerly anticipated announcement welcomed by the service men and women stationed here. Having modern Single Living Accommodation will significantly improve the lived experience and there is buzz of excitement across the station following this contract award.This investment into Royal Air Force Digby is a clear demonstration by the MOD of its intent to enhance the accommodation offer to our personnel while making buildings more sustainable.”
Boosting the Local Economy
The contract stipulates a commitment to using local suppliers and labour wherever possible, ensuring the project benefits the Lincolnshire economy as well as RAF personnel.
Bill Hocking, Chief Executive of Galliford Try, highlighted the company’s pride in supporting the UK’s armed forces:

A Modern Upgrade for a Historic Station
RAF Digby, steeped in history from its World War I origins through its crucial role in World War II as a signals intelligence centre, will now provide accommodation fit for the 21st century.
With construction scheduled to begin in March 2025, the station is poised to become a shining example of modern, sustainable living for military personnel—demonstrating Britain’s ongoing commitment to supporting its armed forces and ensuring they have the best possible conditions to live, train, and serve the nation.
