Royal Air Force Typhoons from 3 (Fighter) Squadron have deployed to Romania to begin the United Kingdom’s four month commitment to NATO’s Air Policing mission, reinforcing security on the Alliance’s eastern flank under Operation Biloxi 2026.

Operating from Borcea Air Base, 121 Expeditionary Air Wing will conduct enhanced Air Policing as part of NATO’s Eastern Sentry vigilance activity, underlining the UK’s enduring commitment to Euro Atlantic and Black Sea security.

The RAF detachment has assumed responsibility from the outgoing German Eurofighter contingent, demonstrating the seamless interoperability and unity that define NATO operations. For more than 60 years, NATO Air Policing has safeguarded allied airspace around the clock, forming a cornerstone of the Alliance’s collective defence.

During the deployment, RAF Typhoons will undertake Quick Reaction Alert duties alongside the Romanian Air Force, identifying, monitoring, and intercepting any unusual or uncoordinated air activity approaching NATO airspace. This defensive mission remains vital in deterring threats and reassuring allies across the region.

The deployment also supports NATO’s Agile Combat Employment principles, proving the RAF’s ability to disperse, adapt, and operate from varied locations at short notice. This enhances survivability, operational flexibility, and responsiveness in an evolving security environment.

Wing Commander Sonny, Officer Commanding 3 (Fighter) Squadron, said the deployment demonstrates the United Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to NATO and the defence of allied airspace, adding that close cooperation with Romanian partners highlights the RAF’s ability to project credible air power whenever and wherever required.

RAF personnel will work closely with Romanian and wider NATO partners, supported by the Combined Air Operations Centre in Torrejon, Madrid, alongside deployed multinational personnel. This coordination ensures a single, coherent allied approach to defending NATO airspace.

NATO Air Policing continues to stand as a visible symbol of allied solidarity, ensuring the ongoing safety and security of the Euro Atlantic and Black Sea regions.
