A £20 million project to revamp a key RAF runway at Mount Pleasant Complex in the Falkland Islands has been completed AHEAD of schedule – despite facing a mammoth logistical challenge, with all equipment and materials having to be shipped 8,000 miles from the UK.
The airfield, a crucial hub for Britain’s defence presence in the South Atlantic, has undergone major resurfacing, ensuring the UK Armed Forces can continue their vital operations in the region.
The project, led by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and carried out by Mitie with a team of specialist British sub-contractors, involved removing 20,000m² of the airfield’s surface and replacing it with high-quality asphalt, mixed on-island in a purpose-built batching plant. The work focused on the Foxtrot taxiway and the crucial runway threshold, where aircraft touch down upon landing.
Battling the elements – and winning!
With the harsh austral winter looming, the team was up against the clock to finish before severe weather could grind operations to a halt. But thanks to an extraordinary effort from all involved – including 8 Engineer Brigade’s Royal Engineers, who ensured smooth coordination between the construction crews and airfield staff – the job was finished early, a remarkable feat given the scale of the task.
Maj Brad Southall RE, DIO’s Project Manager, hailed the achievement:
“Any construction project in the Falklands comes with massive logistical hurdles, but ensuring the airfield remained operational throughout added another layer of complexity. I’m delighted we got the job done ahead of time – a fantastic example of teamwork across all organisations.”
Brigadier Daniel Duff, Commander of British Forces South Atlantic Islands (BFSAI), echoed the sentiment, praising the seamless cooperation between military and civilian teams:
“This wasn’t just a job – it was a mission-critical task for maintaining our operational readiness. The success of this project speaks volumes about the professionalism and determination of everyone involved.”
