Conservative leadership hopeful Robert Jenrick has made a bold call to party members, stressing that this leadership election could define the future of the Conservative Party and its role in British politics.
With voting underway, Jenrick has urged supporters not to miss the chance to back a transformative agenda he says will address the most pressing challenges facing Britain today.
Jenrick believes the Conservative Party stands “at a crossroads,” warning that a failure to take decisive action now could see the party lose support to rival parties, notably Reform, due to a lack of a strong stance on immigration, and risk further erosion of the party’s platform to Labour and the Liberal Democrats.
In a clear message to the Conservative establishment, Jenrick has written to members saying he is prepared to challenge the “cosy consensus” that he feels has restricted bold policymaking on key issues such as immigration, national security, and public services.
As part of his vision, Jenrick has laid out policy commitments, including a focus on reshaping the legal system to prevent foreign criminals from using family rights laws to avoid deportation, and fixing the UK’s strained public services. He proposes achieving a 3% of GDP target for defence spending, funded by cuts to foreign aid, and says he will fight to ensure that Britain’s safety and security remain at the forefront of the party’s agenda.
Jenrick’s campaign is also focused on revitalising the Conservative Party at a grassroots level, with a call for increased membership and engagement, particularly among young people. He sees a future where local members have a stronger voice in choosing candidates and setting strategies well ahead of upcoming elections, building a “proper campaigning strategy” that he believes will allow the Conservatives to not only win back local seats in the 2024 elections but also challenge Labour at the national level in 2029.
Noting the high turnout in the ongoing leadership vote, Jenrick urged members to participate, emphasising that the time to prepare for next year’s local elections is now. With the close of voting fast approaching, he appealed for unity and support, promising to “hit the ground running” if elected as leader.
With his campaign relying on the support of grassroots activists to spread the message, Jenrick also issued a plea for members to reach out to others, emphasising that every vote will shape the direction of the Conservative Party at this critical juncture.
