
Gibraltar has long been known for its famous Barbary macaques, a symbol of Britain’s enduring presence on the Rock. Now, alongside them, a new kind of “guardian” has taken to the skies.
Through the determined efforts of personnel based in this proudly British Overseas Territory, modern drone technology is being brought into service more efficiently than ever before.
At the heart of this development is the Anafi Parrot quadcopter, now firmly part of the Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron’s intelligence and surveillance capability. It has already proven its worth, helping to monitor and safeguard visits by major Royal Navy warships as they arrive in British Gibraltar waters.

What has made this possible is not just the technology itself, but the work done locally to cut through outdated bureaucracy. Previously, the approval system for operating drones from ships, known as ‘ship-air release’, was designed with larger, more complex aircraft in mind. While those rules remain important, applying them to smaller, lightweight drones created unnecessary delays, sometimes stretching into weeks or even months.
Such delays risked holding back frontline operations and limiting the Royal Navy’s ability to keep pace with fast-moving advances in drone technology. Recognising this, the Gibraltar-based team worked closely with safety authorities, maritime specialists, and naval aviation experts to create a more practical solution. They developed new procedures, risk assessments, supporting documentation, and even a dedicated app, cutting approval times down to just days.
This new system, referred to by those involved as ‘the tailored route’, was successfully tested using Anafi Parrot drones aboard HMS Cutlass and HMS Dagger, as well as smaller launches operated by the Squadron. Its success has opened the door for wider adoption across other Royal Navy vessels, including XV Patrick Blackett, diver support Vahana boats, and craft used by 43 and 47 Commandos.
The impact has been clear. The Royal Navy can now deploy lightweight drones more quickly and flexibly from ships and boats, strengthening its operational edge. Administrative burdens have been reduced, and the system is scalable, ready to support the growing role of small drones in modern naval operations.
For Gibraltar, this is another example of its vital contribution to Britain’s defence. Strategically positioned at the gateway to the Mediterranean, the Rock continues to serve as a key military outpost, proudly British and central to Royal Navy operations in the region.

“The improved integration of remotely piloted systems reflects the Royal Navy’s commitment to adopting modern technology that delivers operational advantage.
“As the Squadron continues to refine its procedures and explore more opportunities to further enhance its use, drone technology will play an increasingly important role in supporting both routine patrols and high-profile maritime security activity.”
