
A Royal Navy icebreaker is embarking on a crucial mission to study the fragile ecosystems of Antarctica, with a team of British scientists on board to gather vital data in one of the planet’s most pristine and vulnerable environments.
Two researchers from the University of Portsmouth, Dr Adele Julier and Dr Keiron Roberts, will join the HMS Protector for a five-week expedition to the icy continent.
The mission aims to assess the environmental toll of rising tourist numbers and the effects of global warming on the region’s delicate landscapes.
Dr Julier, a palaeologist and senior lecturer, will focus on examining weather patterns by collecting pollen and other particles from Antarctic sediments. Her research is aimed at uncovering historical climate trends and shifts through techniques usually reserved for tropical environments.
Dr Julier, who has spent over a decade working in warmer climates, couldn’t hide her excitement for this unique Antarctic adventure.
“I’m thrilled to undertake fieldwork where I won’t have to worry about scorpions under my bed or fend off wasps in the shower,” she said. The prospect of observing Adélie penguins in their natural habitat is a definite highlight for her.
This collaboration between the University of Portsmouth and the Royal Navy marks the second consecutive year of their joint efforts in Antarctic research. Last year’s data, collected by Professor Fay Couceiro and Dr Clare Boston, is still being analysed to understand the effects of tourism on pollution and the shrinking glaciers.
Assessing Human Impact on Marine Life
Dr Keiron Roberts, a senior lecturer in sustainability, will build on last year’s research by focusing on how tourism affects the region’s unique marine ecosystems.
With over 100,000 tourists visiting Antarctica during the 2023-24 season, concerns are growing about the potential damage to its delicate environment. Dr Roberts will collect water samples to test for nutrient levels, heavy metals, and signs of antimicrobial resistance—key indicators of human-induced pollution.
He also plans to deploy drones to survey remote coastlines for litter, while a plankton trawl net will help capture microplastics. “This trip allows me to return to my roots in oceanography while incorporating my passion for sustainability,” he said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to conduct research that could influence the future of tourism in Antarctica.”
Cutting-Edge Technology to Support Research
The HMS Protector serves as the command centre for the scientists’ mission, fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology to support their research. The vessel boasts a full sonar suite and a small survey boat with a multi-beam echo sounder to map the sea floor near calving glaciers—enabling rapid data collection in some of the most challenging conditions on Earth.
Captain Tom Weaver, Commanding Officer of HMS Protector, expressed pride in the ship’s continued collaboration with leading scientists.
“HMS Protector’s mission in Antarctica provides valuable opportunities for scientists to access the world’s most significant natural laboratory,” he said. “Last year, we supported research into water pollution and glacier changes, and I’m delighted to once again assist the University of Portsmouth in their vital environmental research this Austral summer.”
