A new chapter in British aviation began this month when the Royal Navy’s first fully autonomous, full-sized helicopter successfully completed its maiden flight from Predannack Airfield on Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula.
The aircraft, named Proteus, was designed and built by Leonardo as a technology demonstrator for the Royal Navy. The project aims to explore how uncrewed aircraft can operate alongside traditional piloted helicopters in a future “hybrid air wing,” with potential roles in anti-submarine warfare as part of the Ministry of Defence’s Atlantic Bastion strategy.
The milestone follows weeks of intensive ground testing at Leonardo’s Yeovil facility in Somerset, where engineers thoroughly evaluated the helicopter’s engines, sensors, and onboard systems before allowing it to take to the air. Representatives from Leonardo, the Royal Navy, and UK Defence Innovation gathered in Cornwall to witness the historic moment.
Predannack Airfield, which supports helicopter operations from nearby RNAS Culdrose, has also become a key site for developing autonomous aviation as the home of the UK’s National Drone Hub.
The successful flight aligns with commitments made in the government’s Strategic Defence Review, which outlined plans for a “New Hybrid Navy” incorporating advanced autonomous systems into frontline operations across the North Atlantic.
While the Royal Navy already uses smaller drones such as Malloy octocopters and the Peregrine surveillance helicopter, Proteus represents a major leap forward in both scale and technological sophistication.
Developed under a £60 million programme, the Proteus demonstrator supports around 100 highly skilled UK jobs in Yeovil and is considered one of the world’s first full-sized autonomous helicopters. Instead of a traditional cockpit crew, the aircraft relies on an integrated network of sensors and artificial intelligence-driven systems that allow it to perceive its surroundings, make decisions, and execute flight operations independently.
With a payload capacity of more than one tonne, Proteus can carry advanced mission equipment and operate in demanding weather conditions, including rough seas and high winds—capabilities that could reduce risk to human crews while expanding the Navy’s operational reach.
Luke Pollard, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, welcomed the achievement, saying: “This maiden flight is a proud moment for British innovation. Designed and built in Yeovil, Proteus supports skilled UK jobs while helping deliver the hybrid navy outlined in our Strategic Defence Review. Autonomous systems like this will be vital in protecting our seas without putting personnel in harm’s way.”
Commodore Steve Bolton, Royal Navy Deputy Director Aviation Future Programmes, described the flight as a turning point for naval aviation: “The successful first flight of Proteus is a significant step in delivering the Royal Navy’s maritime aviation transformation vision, and to demonstrating our steadfast commitment to investing in autonomy as part of a hybrid air wing. This milestone signals our intent to lead technological innovation, to enhance the fighting effectiveness of the Royal Navy in an increasingly complex operating environment, and to maintain operational advantage against evolving maritime threats.”
Nigel Colman, Managing Director Helicopters UK at Leonardo, highlighted the broader significance for British industry: “Proteus represents a step-change in how maritime aviation can deliver persistence, adaptability and reach – conducting the dull, dirty and dangerous missions in challenging environments without putting human operators at risk. As the UK’s only end-to-end rotary wing manufacturer it has been a pleasure working with the Royal Navy and seeing Proteus take off for the first time after being designed, developed, and manufactured at Leonardo’s Yeovil site is a fantastic milestone.”
During its inaugural sortie, Proteus performed a brief test flight in which it controlled its own movements without direct human piloting, though safety pilots monitored the mission from the ground throughout.
Looking ahead, the helicopter is expected to support missions including maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare, working in coordination with allied ships, submarines, aircraft, and detection systems to monitor and track potential underwater threats.
The aircraft will play a central role in the Atlantic Bastion initiative unveiled by the Ministry of Defence last month, which seeks to strengthen the UK’s and NATO’s maritime defenses across the North Atlantic through a more technologically advanced and integrated naval force.
