This news has just broken, and already the air is thick with certainty, accusation, and very little evidence.
“Clear, irrefutable evidence.” Three emphatic words, delivered with finality, confidence, and not a shred of transparency. We are simply asked to accept them on faith.
So let us say it plainly, calmly, and directly. Show us the proof, Kemi.
Because many of us know Rob. I know Rob. And I do not believe for one moment that he was secretly plotting some theatrical, cloak and dagger defection designed to wound the party. That does not align with his character, his record, or his political instincts.
If anything, what he has been guilty of is something far more dangerous to insecure leadership, he has been thinking out loud, challenging orthodoxy, and perhaps positioning himself as an alternative… to YOU. That is not treachery. That is democracy.
If he posed a challenge to your leadership, the answer was not dismissal by decree. The answer was confidence, argument, and performance. Leaders who are cutting through do not sack their challengers. Leaders who are winning do not fear internal competition.
And you are not cutting through.
Look at the polls. Look at the trend. Look at the mood in the country and among the membership. You should be destroying Starmer. You’re not. This party is not crying out for purges. It is crying out for direction, belief, and competence. Instead, it has been handed exactly what you say the public is tired of, political psychodrama.
And please, do not lecture the members about psychodrama.
We remember recent history very clearly. You were not a bystander in the removal of one of the most popular politicians of modern times. Your messages to junior MPs, “DO IT, DO IT, do it!”, are on record. You were one of the key drivers behind the challenges to Boris Johnson.
Nobody should depose a democratically elected Prime Minister except the people. That principle does not evaporate when it becomes inconvenient.
Which brings me back to Rob.
You have not merely sacked a shadow cabinet minister. You have removed the whip and suspended the party membership of one of the party’s most capable and recognisable figures, on the basis of evidence that remains entirely unseen, gathered by a machine that many members no longer trust.
Today’s decision looks less like discipline and more like pre-emption. Clearing the field before the ground starts to move.
And here is the bitter irony, if Rob was not defecting to Reform UK before today, you may well have driven him there now.
Nigel Farage did not need to unveil him. You may have delivered him.
This is how parties fracture, not because of ideology, but because leadership mistakes dissent for disloyalty.
So let us return to the central claim, the one that justifies everything you have done today.
If the evidence is clear and irrefutable, show it.
If it is not, then this was not strength. It was fear.
And the members, make no mistake, will have something to say.
