Soaring to New Heights: British Solar-Powered Aircraft Achieves Stratospheric Success

Britain’s cutting-edge solar-powered aircraft has reached new stratospheric heights, marking a major milestone in the race to revolutionise earth observation and communications.

The PHASA-35, a High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) developed by BAE Systems, has completed a groundbreaking series of test flights, showcasing its potential to operate persistently above the weather and conventional air traffic.

In a remarkable feat, the PHASA-35 flew for 24 hours at Spaceport America in New Mexico, climbing to an altitude of over 66,000 feet before landing in a serviceable condition. Astonishingly, the aircraft was ready for takeoff again just two days later.

This impressive display of rapid deployment and reusability demonstrates the capability of the PHASA-35, which boasts a 35-metre wingspan and runs entirely on solar power.

“This is a significant step forward in proving PHASA-35’s capability for operations, and a real moment of pride for our entire team,” said Bob Davidson, CEO of Prismatic Ltd, a BAE Systems subsidiary. “We’re committed to continuing to develop PHASA-35 at pace to make it available for operational activity as soon as 2026.”

The aircraft, designed to carry out ultra-long endurance intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, performed its latest trials while carrying a sophisticated payload. This included an active surveillance sensor developed by BAE Systems’ Digital Intelligence division — a software-defined radio weighing more than twice as much as its previous payload.

A Leap in Solar Power

Back in the UK, engineers at Prismatic’s Hampshire site are already working on the next iteration of the PHASA-35. This upgraded model will feature over double the solar power generation and storage capacity, enabling it to tackle increasingly complex and prolonged stratospheric missions from 2024 onwards.

Prismatic forms part of FalconWorks, the advanced research and development wing of BAE Systems’ Air Sector. The aircraft’s development has seen close collaboration with industry partners including Honeywell and the UK Met Office.

“These latest trials demonstrate the credibility and capability of the system for operational use,” said Dave Holmes, Managing Director of FalconWorks.

The project aims to push the boundaries of uncrewed aerial technology. Drawing on data from the recent flights, the team will refine and mature the PHASA-35 further, ensuring it is ready for deployment in real-world scenarios by 2026.

With its ability to operate at stratospheric altitudes, well above clouds and traditional air traffic, the PHASA-35 is poised to revolutionise surveillance and communications.
