STOP RISHI from allowing CCHQ to override parliamentary candidate choices made by local associations

Join over 40 MPs who are pleading with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak not to allow Conservative Campaign Headquarters (CCHQ) to override the choices made by local activists and associations over who their parliamentary candidates are.

We are calling on the Prime Minister, Chief Whip, and Chairmen of CCHQ not to impose by-election rules in January, and to maintain democracy in the Party we all love.

The Conservative Post understands over 40 MPs have already signed a letter to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak asking him to stop new rules that will give CCHQ the power next year to override choices made by local activists and associations over who their parliamentary candidates are.

The new rules would steamroller selections of candidates over the head of and against the wishes of local Conservative members and Associations.

In exceptional circumstances, such as when Parliament has already been dissolved, the Party may – if it really wishes – impose a short list on local associations. But these rules should only be used in exceptional, emergency circumstances such as when a by-election or election is in progress, and should not be done routinely or arbitrarily. The General Election might be as soon as May, but most MPs, experts and journalists expect the election to take place as late as Autumn 2024. So, there is no excuse for applying these rules so early, and in such a rush.

Why should local Conservative associations be overruled months before any actual or urgent need? This represents a severe loss of local democratic control over control of candidates. We see this as more to do with making it easier to ‘fix’ selections on behalf of favoured Parliamentary candidates, which is a disgraceful and undemocratic practice, by a small minority of unaccountable powerbrokers.

If you care about democracy please add your name to the MP’s letter below. Once you click submit at the bottom of this page, your name will whizz off to the Prime Minister, the Chief Whip and CCHQ. Thank you for caring about democracy.

SIGN THE PETITION: STOP RISHI from allowing CCHQ to override parliamentary candidate choices made by local associations

Dear Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Chief Whip Simon Hart and CCHQ Chairman Richard Holden,

We believe the Conservative Party is, and should be, a democratic organisation. It is built on the hard work of its members who campaign day in and day out to secure a better future for this country. One of their most important responsibilities is the selection of our candidates at a general election.

This is why each Association sets up a Candidate Selection Committee, ably assisted by their agent, to prepare a list of candidates who are not only willing and able to serve - but have the experience and the skills to represent the seat in Parliament.

The Party Constitution's guidance can be found at schedule 7, section 15 which states that the voting members of the Candidate Selection Committee include:

“15.1.1 The Chairman of the Association;
15.1.2 Other members of the Association appointed by the Executive Council…”

This is so our candidates reflect the views of both members and voters. In exceptional circumstances, such as when Parliament has already been dissolved, the Party may – if it really wishes – imposes a short list on local associations.

This is the application of the “By-Election Rules”, which is schedule 6, paragraph 9 of the constitution.

In recent years no leader has done this, other than when Parliament had already been dissolved and an election underway. We understand the Party plans to do this from January with no clear rationale.

We urge you to stop this and instead continue with the current selection process. If the shortened process is imposed in January this would be a matter of huge concern to us and would damage the democratic process.

Signed...

  1. This is a serious threat to our country. We have an uncontrolled number of migrants coming in. The UAE and Saudis say Europe is becoming an incubator for terrorism.

  2. Scotland badly needs sorting out by the UK Govt. The SNP/Greens are now shown to be thoroughly corrupt and are destroying Scotland. Cameron’s Folly, aka the Scotland Act 2016, limited the UKG intervention in Scottish affairs, but enough is enough. We cannot have another two years of these utterly corrupt, lying imbeciles trampling on the Scottish people and draining the UK dry. Rish Sunak (or whoever) needs to get a grip — he has a duty to all the peoples of the UK, irrespective of what Blair-contrived tin-pot devolution structures are in place. The HoC is sovereign. It can and must fix this.
