British confectionery manufacturer Swizzels Matlow, best known for their Love Hearts, Parma Violets, Refresher Bars and Drumsticks, are building a huge new 158,000 sq ft production facility in Middlewich, Cheshire.
One of the longest running sweet factories in the world, the company runs a 24-hour operation and produces over one million sweets per day, exporting to more than 20 countries across the globe.
The confectionary firm presently employs over 600 workers and has an annual revenue of £78 million.
The company prides itself on 90% of its raw materials and packaging spend being UK based with 20% sourced from the North West of England. The new production facility will be an enormous 158,000 ft2 and bring large business growth and jobs to the area.
Jeremy Dee, managing director at Swizzels said:
“We are excited to embark upon this development to further support the growth of our business.”
“This is excellent news for Middlewich, too, bringing a range of good-quality jobs to the area.”
The expansion is welcome news for England’s largest family-owned confectionery company with a rich history dating back to London 1928.
In fact Swizzels Matlow is considered one of the oldest confectionery companies in the world. The company was first formed as Matlow Bros, a manufacturer of jelly sweets in London, by Alfred and Maurice Matlow in 1928. Swizzels was established five years later in 1933 and was renamed to Swizzels Matlow in 1975.
Swizzels Matlow was awarded the Queen’s Award to Industry in recognition of its export achievements in 1971. In 2012, Swizzels launched the brand Squashies and received the Top Launch award for sugar confectionery from British magazine The Grocer. The company held the Sweetest Invention competition in 2018 to mark its 90th anniversary.
The company’s products include Refreshers, Classics, Pick ‘n’ Mix, Choos, Vegan treats, Drumstick lollies, Squashies, Fun Gums, and Fizzers.
The classics range offered by the brand includes Wine Gummies, Love Heart Lipsticks, Rainbow Dust Straws and Double Dip.
The production of Love Hearts with the embossed messages and edible ink remains a heavily guarded secret and is unique to Swizzels.
According to residents in the local area, Swizzels Matlow has been named as “The Factory of Love” as so many locals have met and found love whilst working there.
