Ah, Rachel Reeves. The woman who is managing our national finances—but, apparently, not her own tax return. You couldn’t make this up.
The irony here is almost Shakespearean, but instead of a tragic hero, we have the Chancellor of the Exchequer, whose job it is to understand the fiscal ins and outs of a nation, claiming taxpayers’ money to pay for her tax return. It’s not only absurd; it’s a slap in the face to every hardworking Briton.
Think about it. Millions of ordinary taxpayers across the country are dutifully filling out their self-assessment forms, many battling long waits with HMRC’s notoriously overwhelmed customer service, or forking out their hard-earned cash to pay accountants for help. They don’t have access to the “MP hotline,” nor do they get a chunk of their costs covered by taxpayers. No, they roll up their sleeves and get on with it, as one would expect. But our Chancellor, Rachel Reeves? She dipped into the public purse for £1,225 to pay someone else to do it for her.
Now, Ms. Reeves might argue that MPs are permitted to claim expenses for parliamentary duties. Fair enough—if those duties relate to parliamentary work. But a tax return? Isn’t it a bit rich, dare I say, for the person overseeing the Treasury to need a third-party hand to manage her own financial affairs? You’d think the Chancellor of all people could navigate the tax return process without outsourcing it.
And let’s be clear, this isn’t an isolated incident. We’ve now learned that 47 MPs made similar claims last year, adding insult to injury as taxpayers face growing frustration over HMRC’s service delays. MPs, meanwhile, enjoy a fast-tracked helpline. One can’t help but feel there’s one rule for the privileged few in Westminster and another for the rest of us mere mortals.
Conservative MP Kevin Hollinrake rightly called out this flagrant hypocrisy, noting: “Typical Labour—one rule for them and another for everyone else.” He’s spot on. And Jacob Rees-Mogg, ever the master of dry wit and common sense, nailed it when he said:
“It didn’t occur to me as an MP that I could claim accountancy fees from the taxpayer.
“This may be within the rules but it is hard to justify when millions of people on self-assessment have to fill out their own forms or pay an accountant. However, we have seen in the last few weeks the rapacious greed of socialists.”
Indeed, it may technically be “within the rules,” but it’s still galling. And what makes this all the more troubling is the bigger picture. At the very moment millions of Brits are struggling under the weight of spiralling energy bills, mortgage payments, and rising costs across the board, they see their Chancellor shirking her own responsibilities while sending the bill to them. The optics, as they say, are dreadful.
And let’s not forget, this is the same Rachel Reeves whose parliamentary credit card was suspended not long ago. That’s right—the woman tasked with managing the nation’s finances can’t seem to keep her own under control. When she’s was Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, she had her official card suspended for incurring debts of thousands of pounds. If that doesn’t make you question her fitness for the role, I don’t know what will.
In the end, this is yet another case of hypocrisy from a party that claims to stand for fairness, for “levelling the playing field,” while simultaneously playing by its own self-serving set of rules. And the people footing the bill? As always, it’s the British taxpayer.
Maybe next time, Rachel, pay for your own accountant—or better yet, learn to file your tax return yourself. It’s what the rest of us have to do.
