After initial backlash over the altered Union Jack design, Team GB has confirmed that athletes will revert back to wearing the traditional flag at the Paris Olympics this summer.

The controversy surrounding the Team GB flag design for the upcoming Olympics sparked a heated debate among fans and leading sporting figures.

The decision to revert to the traditional Union Jack comes after criticism from fans and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who emphasised the importance of respecting national flags.

Downing Street reiterated the sentiment that national flags are symbols of pride and identity that shouldn’t be tampered with.

The altered flag design, featuring different shades and patterns, had drawn comparisons to recent controversies over England’s Euro 2024 kit, which also deviated from traditional designs.

While the controversial design will still appear on some merchandise, the official Team GB kit for the Paris Olympics will showcase the traditional red, white, and blue colors alongside the Union Jack emblem, reassuring fans of the team’s commitment to national pride. (Image credit: Team GB)

Sporting legends like Peter Shilton and Fatima Whitbread expressed their disapproval of the changes, emphasising the symbolism and importance of the Union Jack as a representation of the UK’s heritage and values.

Peter Shilton CBE said: “I’m totally against any change to our national flag. It feels that nothing is held sacred these days in the UK.

“Our national flag has been symbolic for many years and should never be changed.”
